Personal vs Desert vs Tower Air Coolers

The counts above are of models verified at a manufacturer's own price on this site as of September 2026, which is also a fair reflection of what the Indian market actually stocks: desert coolers dominate, window coolers are a niche.

• Cooling one person at a desk or in a small bedroom: personal. Anything larger is wasted money and takes up floor space.
• Cooling a hall, a large bedroom or an open-plan living area in dry heat: desert. Nothing else moves enough air.
• A living room where the cooler will be visible and floor space is tight: tower. Accept the smaller tank and more frequent refills as the price of the footprint.
• A room with a spare window and no floor space to give up: window. It also solves the ventilation problem by design, because it is drawing outside air rather than recirculating the room's.
• A shop, warehouse or hall: none of the above — go to the commercial and industrial formats.

By far the most common error is buying a personal cooler for a room it cannot serve, usually because the tank figure looked reassuring. A 40 litre personal cooler and a 40 litre desert cooler hold the same water and do not move the same air — the desert unit has a substantially larger blower and a longer throw.

Work out the air delivery your room needs first, then pick the smallest format that meets it. That order gets the right answer; starting from the tank size does not.
