❄️ Refrigerator guide
What Size Refrigerator Do I Need?
The formula, and why it is more conservative than the brand charts
Brand sizing charts assume a Western fill pattern — packaged goods, flat boxes, bottles that stack. An Indian fridge holds steel and glass containers of cooked dal, sabzi and curd, plus a large volume of fresh coriander, curry leaves and vegetables that resist stacking entirely. The same litres hold noticeably less food.
A formula that survives contact with a real kitchen: 100 litres for the first two adults, 60-70 litres for each person after that, and a further 40-50 litres if you cook in batches or shop once a week rather than every second day.
| Household | Calculated | Buy this band | Formats available |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 adult, hostel or PG | 45-90 L | 45-100 L | Mini fridge |
| 1 adult, cooks at home | 100-190 L | 150-200 L | Single door |
| Couple | 160-220 L | 190-250 L | Single or small double door |
| Family of 3 | 230-280 L | 250-300 L | Double door frost free |
| Family of 4 | 290-350 L | 300-400 L | Double door, triple door |
| Family of 5 | 350-420 L | 400-500 L | Triple door, small side-by-side |
| Joint family of 6-8 | 470-600 L | 550-650 L | Side-by-side, French door |
| Joint family 8+, entertains | 600 L+ | 650 L+ | French door, four-door |
Gross capacity versus what you can actually use
The litre figure on the box is gross internal volume, measured with the shelves out. What you can load is lower, and how much lower depends on the format.
On a double door, budget 10-15% for shelving, drawers and door liners. On a side-by-side, budget 15-20%, because the ice maker housing and the water tank sit inside the cabinet and consume litres that are still counted in the headline number. A 550-litre side-by-side and a 500-litre triple door can hold a very similar amount of food.
Note
Physical dimensions, by format
- Add 50-75 mm of clearance behind the fridge for condenser airflow, and 25 mm at each side. Boxing a fridge into a tight alcove raises its running cost and shortens compressor life.
- Measure the narrowest point on the delivery path — usually a bathroom-adjacent corridor turn or a staircase landing, not the main door.
- A side-by-side needs the least door swing of any large format, which is what makes it viable in galley kitchens where a 400-litre double door physically cannot open.
| Format | Typical width | Depth with handle | Height | Swing clearance needed |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Single door 190 L | 55-60 cm | 62-68 cm | 115-125 cm | 60 cm |
| Double door 265 L | 55-60 cm | 65-72 cm | 155-170 cm | 60 cm |
| Triple door 340 L | 60-65 cm | 68-75 cm | 170-185 cm | 65 cm |
| Side-by-side 550-650 L | 88-92 cm | 72-80 cm | 175-185 cm | 45 cm per door |
| French door 600-700 L | 88-95 cm | 75-85 cm | 175-190 cm | 48 cm per door |
Important
When to size up and when not to
- Size up if you batch-cook on weekends, shop weekly, host regularly, or have a growing family. Running an oversized fridge two-thirds full is efficient; running an undersized one packed solid is not, because airflow is blocked.
- Size up if your area has long power cuts. A fuller, larger cabinet holds temperature substantially longer than a small one.
- Do not size up on the assumption that you will grow into it if your kitchen cannot take the footprint. A large fridge in a corridor because it did not fit the kitchen is a daily annoyance for a decade.
- Do not size up past 650 litres unless you genuinely store large platters. Above that point you are paying for width you will fill with air.
