Supercapacitor vs Battery Dash Cam: Which Survives Indian Heat?

5 min readPublished 8 October 2026Updated

What the energy store is for

A dash cam runs on the car's power. When you switch off, it needs a second or two of reserve to close the file it is writing — otherwise the last clip, often the one that matters, is corrupted. That reserve is either a supercapacitor or a small lithium-polymer battery.

A few battery cameras also use the battery to record briefly after an impact while unpowered, but only for seconds to minutes. Real parking surveillance always needs constant power from a hardwire or OBD kit.

Why heat decides it in India

A car parked in the sun in an Indian summer gets far hotter inside than the air outside, and the windscreen-mounted camera sits in the hottest spot. That is why most dash cams sold specifically for India — the Qubo range almost entirely, the NEXDIGITRON Ace 2 and Prime Plus, and the 70mai T800 and S500 — use supercapacitors.

Tip

Even a supercapacitor camera has a thermal cut-off. In peak summer, if the car stands in direct sun all day, it may switch itself off to protect itself; a sunshade helps.

Frequently asked questions

Is a supercapacitor dash cam better than a battery one?
For India, yes — it tolerates a parked car's heat far better and lasts longer. Both save the last clip at power-off equally well.
Does a supercapacitor dash cam work in parking mode?
Yes, with a hardwire or OBD kit providing constant power. The supercapacitor itself stores only seconds of energy.
