Water quality by city
Water quality in Sambalpur
Odisha · indicative TDS 200–600 ppm · moderate · Piped municipal supply blended with borewell water, so TDS varies by zone and by season more than a single figure suggests.
Important
The figures
| Parameter | Indicative value | What it means locally |
|---|---|---|
| TDS range | 200–600 ppm | Spans a band where RO is warranted at the top and unnecessary at the bottom. Measure your own. |
| Dominant source | Piped municipal supply blended with borewell water, so TDS varies by zone and by season more than a single figure suggests. | Piped municipal supply blended with borewell water, so TDS varies by zone and by season more than a single figure suggests. |
| Hardness class | moderate | Some scale over time, no significant practical complaints for most households. |
| Design TDS for sizing | 440 ppm | The figure our sizing tools use for this city when you have not measured your own. |
BIS IS 10500:2012 sets an acceptable TDS limit of 500 mg/L, extendable to 2,000 mg/L only where no alternate source exists. WHO sets no health-based guideline for TDS at all — it is a palatability parameter, not a safety one.
The tests worth paying for in Sambalpur
Chosen from Sambalpur’s dominant supply source and the regional geology of Odisha. Regional occurrence is a reason to test, never a prediction of your result — arsenic, fluoride and uranium all vary well by well.
- TDS, pH, total hardness, chloride₹300–₹800
The baseline panel. It establishes the character of your supply and whether RO or softening is the right direction at all.
What this parameter means → - Total coliform and E. coli₹300–₹900
The microbiological check. Contaminated water looks, tastes and smells completely normal, and no meter detects it.
What this parameter means → - Nitrate₹250–₹700
The most widespread agricultural contaminant in Indian groundwater, tasteless and invisible to a TDS meter. Essential if there is a bottle-fed infant in the household.
What this parameter means → - Iron (total and dissolved)₹250–₹700
The most useful pre-installation test on any groundwater supply. Iron above roughly 0.3 mg/L fouls RO membranes irreversibly and coats UV sleeves.

What a city figure cannot tell you
This is worth being explicit about, because city-level water data is routinely used as though it described a specific tap.
- Within-city variation exceeds the range shown. Two borewells a hundred metres apart, drilled to different depths, can differ by an order of magnitude in iron, hardness and TDS.
- Your building sits between the mains and your tap. An underground sump, a pump, an overhead tank and the risers all change the water, and the tank in particular is a common contamination point.
- Seasons matter. Many Indian supplies blend municipal and borewell water differently across the year, and monsoon changes turbidity and microbiological risk within days.
- TDS says nothing about safety. Arsenic, lead, nitrate, fluoride and every pathogen are invisible to the meter that produced this range.
