BIS IS 10500:2012 sets an acceptable TDS limit of 500 mg/L, extendable to 2,000 mg/L only where no alternate source exists. WHO sets no health-based guideline for TDS at all — it is a palatability parameter, not a safety one.

This is worth being explicit about, because city-level water data is routinely used as though it described a specific tap.
- Within-city variation exceeds the range shown. Two borewells a hundred metres apart, drilled to different depths, can differ by an order of magnitude in iron, hardness and TDS.
- Your building sits between the mains and your tap. An underground sump, a pump, an overhead tank and the risers all change the water, and the tank in particular is a common contamination point.
- Seasons matter. Many Indian supplies blend municipal and borewell water differently across the year, and monsoon changes turbidity and microbiological risk within days.
- TDS says nothing about safety. Arsenic, lead, nitrate, fluoride and every pathogen are invisible to the meter that produced this range.
