Air purifier diagnostics

Your air purifier's readings do not look right

Consumer optical sensors are indicators, not instruments. They are useful for trend and direction, and they should not be treated as calibrated measurements — especially not the ones sitting in the purifier's own clean-air outlet.

Does this match your symptoms?

  • Purifier and independent monitor disagree substantially
  • Reading stuck at a very low number regardless of conditions
  • Readings spike during monsoon or after a shower
  • Numbers jump erratically

Work through the causes in this order

Ordered by how often each turns out to be the real cause — not by what it costs to fix. 4 of these cost nothing to resolve.

  1. Most commonYou can fix thisFree to fix

    1. Sensor sits in the clean-air outlet

    How to confirm it

If the purifier reports single digits while a monitor across the room reads 60, check where the sensor intake sits relative to the clean-air outlet. Many designs sample air that has just been filtered.

    The fix

Nothing to repair — understand the limitation. Judge room air with an independent monitor placed away from the purifier, and use the on-board reading to confirm the unit is responding.

    2. Humidity inflating readings

    How to confirm it

Readings rise during monsoon, after a hot shower, or when clothes dry indoors. Optical sensors cannot distinguish a water droplet from a dust particle unless they compensate for humidity, and inexpensive ones do not.

    The fix

Interpret high-humidity readings with caution. Compare against a sensor with humidity compensation if the distinction matters to you.

    3. Dust-fouled optical chamber

    How to confirm it

Readings biased high, or drifting upward over months. Inspect the sensor inlet for dust build-up — a documented maintenance item on most models.

    The fix

Clean the optical chamber with a dry cotton bud and soft brush, or light compressed air. Never use liquid.

    4. Inherent limits of consumer sensing

    How to confirm it

Two units side by side reading differently is normal. Consumer optical sensors are typically accurate to within a broad band and are not calibrated against a reference instrument.

    The fix

Use the reading for direction and trend — is it going down when I run this, is it worse today than yesterday — rather than as an absolute figure. That is the question it can actually answer.

    Part: None

When to stop and call a technician

  • The reading is frozen at one value even when the unit is moved between obviously different environments
  • The unit is under warranty and its readings are wildly implausible after a sensor clean

Costs shown are indicative bands for India, published so you can sanity-check a quote — they are not quotations, and they vary by brand, city and whether the technician is brand-authorised. Last reviewed 2026-08-08.

Frequently asked questions

Can I calibrate my air purifier's sensor?
Very few consumer units expose a calibration function, and where one exists it is usually a zero-point reset performed in clean air rather than a true calibration against a reference. Cleaning the optical chamber achieves more than any adjustment available to an owner.
Should I trust my purifier's PM2.5 number?
Trust the direction, not the digit. If it falls when you close the room and run the unit on high, the purifier is working, and that is the useful signal. For an absolute figure — deciding whether it is safe to open the windows, for instance — use a dedicated monitor placed away from the purifier's outlet.
