The pre-filter is the job that pays for itself

The pre-filter is a washable mesh that captures hair, lint and large dust before they reach the HEPA media. Cleaning it takes two minutes with a vacuum or under a tap, costs nothing, and materially extends the life of the expensive filter behind it.

It is also the maintenance task almost nobody does. A clogged pre-filter restricts airflow, which means the fan works harder, the unit gets louder, CADR drops, and the HEPA filter loads up faster. All of that is avoidable.

Set a monthly reminder. In a home with pets, make it fortnightly.

Important

Never wash a HEPA filter unless the manufacturer explicitly states it is washable. Water damages the pleated media and destroys its filtration efficiency permanently, even though it will look fine afterwards.

Clean the sensor, or stop trusting the readings

The PM2.5 sensor is an optical device, and dust accumulating on its lens makes it read progressively higher than reality. That has two consequences: your displayed number becomes fiction, and auto mode runs the fan harder than necessary, wasting filter life and making noise.

Locate the sensor — usually a small vented panel on the side — open it per the manual, and gently clean the optical chamber with a dry cotton bud every couple of months. If your readings suddenly seem permanently high, this is the first thing to check.

Warning signs your filter is finished

PM2.5 readings no longer fall as quickly in a closed room as they used to. This is the most reliable indicator.
Noticeably reduced airflow from the outlet.
The unit runs at high speed constantly in auto mode.
A musty smell from the outlet, which suggests a damp or biologically loaded filter.
Visible grey loading across the HEPA pleats — though a filter can be exhausted before it looks dirty.

How often should I change my air purifier filter?

Rated life is typically 6-24 months for HEPA and 6-12 months for carbon, but in Delhi, Ghaziabad or Noida expect half to a third of that. The reliable test is performance: if PM2.5 no longer drops quickly in a closed room, the filter is finished regardless of what the calendar or indicator says.

Can I wash and reuse a HEPA filter?

No, unless the manufacturer explicitly states the filter is washable — a small number of electrostatic filters, such as Daikin's, are designed for cleaning. Washing a standard HEPA filter permanently damages the pleated media and destroys its efficiency, even though it will look intact afterwards.

How much do air purifier filters cost per year in India?

Typically ₹2,000-₹6,500 a year depending on model and city. Xiaomi is at the low end with cheap, widely available filters; Dyson and Coway sit at the high end.
