Agricultural water treatment splits into three quite different problems. Irrigation water with high salinity or sodium damages soil structure and reduces yield, and the relevant measures are electrical conductivity and sodium adsorption ratio rather than drinking-water parameters. Livestock drinking water affects animal health and productivity, and tolerable TDS limits differ by species and age. Dairy operations additionally need hygienic water for udder washing and equipment cleaning.
The economics are unforgiving on scale. Treating irrigation volumes by RO is generally not viable except for high-value protected cultivation, so for field crops the practical levers are blending, drainage management, gypsum application for sodic soils and crop selection. Be sceptical of anyone proposing to RO your irrigation supply.
Where RO does make sense in agriculture: livestock drinking water on brackish groundwater, dairy equipment cleaning, greenhouse and hydroponic nutrient water, and farmhouse potable supply.
What this application specifically requires
- Irrigation water assessed on electrical conductivity and sodium adsorption ratio, not TDS alone.
- Livestock drinking water TDS limits set by species and age, with sulphate and nitrate checked.
- Hygienic water for dairy udder washing and equipment cleaning, with appropriate disinfection.
- Iron and hardness removal for drip irrigation systems, where emitter clogging is the main failure mode.
- Realistic economics: RO for irrigation volumes is rarely viable outside high-value protected cultivation.
Typical system recommendation
For livestock and dairy, an RO system sized to drinking and washing demand — often 250-1,000 LPH — with iron removal pre-treatment where groundwater is ferrous. For drip irrigation on hard or ferrous water, filtration and iron removal to prevent emitter clogging is the high-value intervention. For field-crop salinity, blending, drainage and agronomic management are almost always more economic than membrane treatment.
Multi-stage purification architecture
Commercial and industrial systems are engineered as a treatment train, not a single appliance. Each module protects the one after it, and skipping a stage to save capex is the most common reason plants fail early.
- Pre-treatment module — multigrade sand filter removes suspended solids and turbidity; activated carbon filter strips chlorine and organics that would oxidise the RO membrane.
- Softening or antiscalant dosing — protects membranes from calcium and magnesium scaling. On hard feed water this is not optional.
- High-pressure RO module — heavy-duty booster pump drives feed water through industrial spiral-wound membranes at 12-18 bar.
- Post-treatment disinfection — UV disinfection and/or ozonation, with mineral dosing where potable taste matters.
- Microprocessor / PLC control — auto start-stop on tank level, dry-run protection, low and high pressure cut-offs, and timed membrane flushing to extend membrane life.
Tip
Total cost of ownership, not just capex
Capital cost is usually 30-40% of what a commercial water system costs you over five years. The rest is power, membrane and cartridge replacement, reject water, and labour. Two plants with identical price tags can differ by 60% in five-year TCO.
- Power — energy-efficient pumps and correctly sized motors are the largest controllable operating cost on plants above 500 LPH.
- Recovery ratio — a plant recovering 70% instead of 45% cuts both your feed water bill and your reject disposal volume substantially.
- Membrane life — driven almost entirely by pre-treatment quality and flushing discipline, not by membrane brand.
- Consumables — cartridge filters, antiscalant and salt for softener regeneration, budgeted monthly rather than as surprises.
- AMC and downtime — for a production facility, unplanned downtime usually dwarfs every other line item.
Installation, commissioning and service response
Commercial buyers are buying uptime, so the commercial terms matter as much as the equipment specification. Insist on these being written into the purchase order rather than discussed verbally.
- Site survey and feed-water analysis before the final quotation — never accept a specification produced without a water report.
- Defined commissioning scope: civil and electrical prerequisites, who supplies what, and a documented performance test at handover.
- Written service response times, with escalation, and clarity on whether spares are held locally.
- Operator training and a laminated SOP left on site, so routine flushing and cartridge changes do not depend on one person.
- Warranty terms stated separately for membranes, pumps, vessels and instrumentation, because they differ.
What a quotation includes
- Site survey and feed-water analysis
- Application-specific process design and capacity sizing
- Equipment supply, installation and commissioning
- Performance validation against your quality requirement
- Operator training, documentation and AMC proposal
Why specify with us
Low total cost of ownership
High-rejection membranes, correctly sized pre-treatment and efficient pumps reduce power draw, consumable spend and reject volume. We quote five-year operating cost alongside capex, because that is the number that actually matters.
Heavy-duty SS-304 / SS-316 build
Corrosion-resistant stainless chassis and wetted parts engineered for continuous 24/7 duty, with SS-316 specified where chlorides or process chemistry demand it.
Rapid on-site servicing & AMC
Pan-India installation and service, with written response times and escalation in the AMC rather than verbal assurances — because plant downtime, not the repair, is your real cost.
Custom TDS tuning
Systems engineered against your actual water analysis — brackish groundwater, municipal supply or heavy borewell input, including high-TDS configurations for 3,000+ ppm feed.
Treatment architecture
- 1
Pre-treatment module
Multigrade sand and activated carbon filtration strips suspended solids, turbidity and chlorine that would otherwise oxidise the RO membrane.
- 2
Softening / antiscalant dosing
Protects membranes from calcium and magnesium scaling. On hard feed water this stage is not optional — it determines membrane life.
- 3
High-pressure RO module
Heavy-duty booster pumps drive feed water through industrial spiral-wound membranes at 12-18 bar in an array sized for your recovery target.
- 4
Post-treatment disinfection
UV disinfection and ozonation, with mineral dosing where potable taste and consistency matter.
- 5
Microprocessor / PLC controls
Auto start-stop on tank level, dry-run protection, high and low pressure cut-offs, and timed membrane flushing — with data logging on industrial plants.
