Check the filter price and availability before you buy the machine
The verdict
A purifier is a subscription to its own consumables. Before buying any model, look up the price and availability of its replacement filters — because a machine whose cartridges are scarce, single-sourced or expensive is a bad purchase whatever the unit costs, and a discontinued model with no available filters is scrap. This takes two minutes at the point of sale and cannot be fixed afterwards.

You are buying on a full-service rental
Then consumables are the provider's problem and their price is not yours. Check the rental terms and the lock-in period instead.

Read the inclusion list carefully — the membrane is the item most often excluded from 'comprehensive'. But if it genuinely is covered, the consumable price matters less than the AMC price.
Why you were told otherwise
Usually not because anyone lied to you. Almost every claim in this category is technically true and incomplete, which is a much more durable technique.
- Margin on the machine is thin and margin on the consumables that only fit it is not. That structure is not a secret; it is simply not discussed at the point of sale.
- Consumable pricing is genuinely hard to find, which is convenient rather than accidental.
- Proprietary cartridge formats exist specifically to prevent third-party competition.
- By the time you discover the cartridge price, you own the machine, which is precisely when your negotiating position disappears.
