3 Star vs 5 Star AC: The Payback, Worked Out in Rupees

7 min readPublished 14 September 2026Updated

What the star actually measures

BEE's star label for ACs is based on ISEER — the Indian Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio, the cooling delivered per unit of electricity across a typical Indian temperature profile. A higher ISEER means a lower bill for the same cooling. The label also declares annual units, measured over a 1,600-hour season: roughly 5 hours a day for 11 months, or 8 hours a night for six or seven.

Because BEE periodically tightens the ISEER needed for each star, a label is comparable only with others from the same label year.

A real pair, worked through

Panasonic sells a 3-star and a 5-star 1.5 ton unit with the same smart features, which makes a clean comparison.

Tip

Double the hours — an AC run through long nights for most of the year — and the saving roughly doubles, bringing payback to about five years. At a higher electricity slab, it shortens further.

Who should buy which

  • Buy 5-star: a bedroom AC run all night for most of the summer, a home office, a shop or clinic, or a home on a high electricity slab.
  • Buy 3-star: a living room used in the evenings, a guest room, a rented home you will leave in two or three years, or a tight budget.
  • Either way: choose the higher ISEER within your star, and check the rated capacity suits the room — an undersized 5-star unit running flat out loses its efficiency advantage.

Frequently asked questions

How much electricity does a 5 star AC save compared with a 3 star?
For a 1.5 ton inverter split, about 170-230 units a year at the BEE's 1,600-hour season on the models we compare — roughly ₹1,400-₹1,850 a year at ₹8 a unit. The saving scales with hours of use.
Is a 5 star AC worth it for a bedroom?
If you run it through the night for most of the summer, yes — that is exactly the long-hours use where the saving repays fastest. For a bedroom used a few hours a night for three months, a top-of-band 3-star inverter is the better buy.
Which AC uses the least electricity?
Of the ACs we compare, Hitachi's RAS.V512PCDIST 1 ton 5-star declares the fewest units, 486 a year. At 1.5 ton, Blue Star's IC718QCUS (675 units, ISEER 5.85) and Lloyd's GLS18V5AGGGW (646 units, ISEER 5.75) are the most efficient.
