Choosing an AC for Extreme Heat, Humidity and Coastal Air

An AC rejects heat through its outdoor unit, and the hotter the outdoor air, the less cooling it delivers. The rated ambient temperature is the highest outdoor temperature at which the brand says the AC keeps cooling. Most mainstream units are rated to 52°C; the ACs on our extreme-heat list are rated to 54-56°C.

On a top floor the outdoor unit often sits in air well above the forecast temperature, especially on a sun-baked terrace. Size the AC up one step, put the outdoor unit in shade with clear space around it, and never box it into a tight grille.

In humid cities, comfort depends as much on moisture as on temperature. An AC removes moisture while its compressor runs, so an oversized unit that reaches the set temperature in minutes and then idles leaves the room cool but damp. Size accurately, prefer an inverter that runs long and gently, and use dry mode on muggy days.

Rated ambient matters less here than in the north — coastal cities rarely exceed 40°C — so the budget is better spent on efficiency and coil protection.

Salt-laden sea air corrodes the aluminium fins and copper tubes of the outdoor coil, and a corroded coil loses cooling and eventually leaks gas. Coatings slow corrosion; they do not stop it. Within a few kilometres of the sea, have the outdoor coil washed with fresh water at least once a year, mount the outdoor unit away from direct sea spray, and check whether the brand's warranty covers corrosion.
