Does an Air Cooler Work in Humid Weather?

6 min readPublished 18 September 2026Updated

Why humidity is the deciding variable

When water evaporates it takes energy with it, and that energy comes out of the surrounding air as a drop in temperature. How much water can evaporate depends on how far the air is from saturation. Dry air is a long way from saturation and absorbs a lot; humid air is already close and absorbs little.

So the same cooler, with the same pads, pump and blower, can drop the air temperature meaningfully in Jaipur in May and do almost nothing in Mumbai in July. Nothing about the appliance has changed.

Relative humidityWhat to expectTypical Indian conditions
Under 45%Works well — a real, obvious temperature dropDelhi, Jaipur, Ahmedabad, Nagpur, Hyderabad, Apr-Jun
45-60%Helps, but modestlyMuch of central India, shoulder months
60-70%Marginal; air movement does more than the coolingPre-monsoon coastal, humid inland spells
Over 70%Little cooling; room feels damperMumbai, Chennai, Kochi, Kolkata; monsoon nationwide

What makes it worse, and what helps a little

  • Worse: closing the room. Without an exit path the humidity the cooler adds accumulates, and cooling falls off within the hour.
  • Worse: running it overnight in a closed bedroom in humid weather — the classic complaint of damp bedding.
  • Helps: strong cross ventilation, so the humidified air leaves and drier air replaces it.
  • Helps a little: an ice chamber, which lowers the temperature of the water being evaporated. The effect is real but lasts only while the ice does, typically under an hour.
  • Does not help: a bigger tank. Litres are run time, not cooling capacity.

If you live in a humid city

The honest recommendation is a ceiling fan for most of the season and an air conditioner in the room where you need reliable comfort. A cooler bought for a coastal summer is the most common regretted purchase in this category, and we would rather say so than sell one.

There is a partial exception: a cooler used outdoors or in a very open covered space — a balcony, a shaded terrace, a workshop with open sides — still helps in moderate humidity, because the humidified air disperses instead of accumulating.

Note

If you are in Mumbai, Chennai, Kochi, Kolkata or coastal Gujarat and shopping for summer cooling, look at air conditioners or ceiling fans instead. We would rather lose the sale than sell you a cooler that cannot work.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use an air cooler in Mumbai or Chennai?
You can, but you should not expect much. Summer relative humidity in both routinely sits above 70%, which is where evaporative cooling delivers very little temperature drop and noticeably raises indoor moisture. A fan or an air conditioner is the better purchase there.
Does an air cooler work in the monsoon?
Barely, anywhere in India. Monsoon air is close to saturated, so there is little capacity for further evaporation. Most owners in dry-summer cities simply stop using the cooler once the rains arrive — and that is the right time to drain it, clean the pads and let it dry before storage.
Why is my air cooler making the room humid?
Because that is how it cools — it adds water vapour to the air. In dry conditions you gain more in temperature than you lose in comfort from the extra moisture. In humid conditions, or in a sealed room where the moisture cannot escape, the balance tips the other way. Open a window opposite the cooler.
Will a bigger air cooler work better in humid weather?
No. A larger unit moves more air and evaporates more water, which in humid conditions means it humidifies the room faster without cooling it much more. The limit is set by the air's capacity to absorb moisture, not by the size of the cooler.
