Why Is My Air Cooler Not Cooling?

Work through these in order
- 1. Humidity. Above about 60% relative humidity a cooler cannot do much. Check today's humidity before assuming a fault — this is the commonest explanation by a wide margin.
- 2. Ventilation. Is a window or door open opposite the cooler? In a sealed room, humidity rises until evaporation stops. Open it and give it twenty minutes.
- 3. Water level. If the tank is below the pump intake the pads dry out and the unit becomes a fan. Check the level indicator, and check it is not lying — float indicators stick.
- 4. Pump. With the cooler running, look at the top of the pads: water should be visibly trickling across the full width. No trickle means a failed pump, a disconnected hose or a blocked intake filter.
- 5. Distributor holes. Wet in the middle, dry at the edges means blocked holes in the distribution pipe. Clear them with a pin and descale in hard-water areas.
- 6. Pad condition. Hardened, scaled or compacted pads cool poorly and restrict airflow at the same time. Rinse; if that does not restore them, replace.
- 7. Airflow path. Check the rear intake grilles are not blocked by a wall or furniture, and that the blower wheel is not caked with dust. A cooler needs clearance behind it.
- 8. Placement. A cooler should draw the driest air available — ideally from a window, blowing into the room. Standing it in the middle of a closed room recirculating its own humid output is self-defeating.
- 9. Sizing. If it was always underwhelming rather than recently worse, it may simply be too small. Work out the required air delivery and compare it with what the unit is rated for.
How to make a working cooler cool better
- Position it at a window so it draws outside air rather than recirculating room air.
- Open an exit path on the opposite side of the room, not next to the cooler.
- Run it for ten to fifteen minutes before you need the room — the pads have to be fully wetted for the cooling to reach full effect.
- Use the ice chamber if it has one, for a short boost on the hottest afternoons. Expect under an hour of benefit.
- Keep the pads clean. This is the single biggest recoverable performance loss on an older cooler.
- Add a ceiling fan. Moving the cooled air around the room does more for perceived comfort than another few litres of tank.
Tip
If the pads are wet, the airflow is strong and the room still will not cool, measure the humidity. A cooler working perfectly in 75% humidity will still feel like it is doing nothing.

Why is my air cooler blowing warm air?
Almost always dry pads. Either the tank is empty, the pump has failed, or the distributor holes are blocked so water is not reaching the pad surface. With dry pads there is no evaporation and the unit simply moves room-temperature air.
How can I increase the cooling of my air cooler?
Place it at a window so it draws drier outside air, open an exit path on the far side of the room, clean or replace the pads, and make sure the rear intake is not against a wall. Those four between them recover most of the lost performance on an underperforming cooler.
Why is my air cooler making noise?
A rattle is usually a loose louver or panel screw. A grinding or scraping sound is the blower wheel touching its housing, often after the unit has been moved. A gurgle is normal pump noise when the water level is low. A persistent hum with weak airflow suggests a failing motor bearing.
Should I add ice to my air cooler?
Only in the ice chamber, if it has one. Ice lowers the temperature of the water being evaporated, which gives a real but short boost — typically under an hour. Tipping ice straight into a tank not designed for it can crack the plastic and does not improve cooling much once it melts.
