Ceiling Fan Problems and How to Fix Them
The fan runs slowly
If an induction fan has gradually lost speed over a few years, the capacitor has almost certainly weakened. It is a small cylindrical component in the canopy or the downrod housing, it costs ₹100-200, and an electrician replaces it in fifteen minutes. Replacing the whole fan for this is a common and expensive mistake.
If the fan has always been slow, the problem is more likely sizing or voltage: a 1,200 mm fan in a 14x16 ft hall will never feel adequate, and low supply voltage in the evening slows an induction motor noticeably. A BLDC fan is far less sensitive to voltage because its controller regulates the motor.
The fan is noisy
- A hum that changes with speed: usually the regulator, especially an old resistive one. Replacing it with an electronic step regulator normally fixes it.
- A rattle or click that changes with speed: loose blade screws, a loose downrod pin, or the canopy touching the ceiling rose. Tighten everything, including the screws holding the blade to the blade iron.
- A steady grinding whirr: dry or worn bearings. On an older fan this usually means a service or a replacement.
- Air noise at high speed only: normal, and usually a sign the fan is undersized for the room and being run flat out.
The fan wobbles
Wobble is almost always mechanical, not electrical. Check that all blade screws are tight, then measure from the ceiling down to each blade tip — if one differs by more than a few millimetres, that blade is bent and needs gentle straightening or replacing. Most fans ship with a small balancing weight kit for what remains.
It is worth fixing rather than living with: a wobbling fan puts constant side load on the bearings and the downrod mount, and it shortens the fan's life.
Important
The remote has stopped working
- Replace the battery first — it accounts for most cases, and an infrared remote fades gradually rather than failing outright.
- Re-pair the handset. Most BLDC fans pair by switching the fan off at the wall for about ten seconds and holding a button on the remote as it powers up; the manual gives the exact sequence.
- If neither works, the receiver in the canopy has usually failed. That is a warranty part on a fan still in cover, and a service visit otherwise.
- The fan itself should still run from the wall switch at its last set speed, so a dead remote is never an emergency.
Installation and maintenance
Ceiling fan installation typically costs ₹300-600 in an Indian city, and unlike an air conditioner it is very rarely included in the price — check before you order online. The job needs an existing hook and a ceiling rose; if the room has neither, add wiring costs.
Maintenance is mostly cleaning. Dust on the leading edge of the blades measurably reduces air delivery, so wipe them at the start of each summer. Do not oil a modern fan unless the manual says to — most use sealed double ball bearings that need nothing.
