Air purifier diagnostics

Your air purifier's fan will not run

If it powers up but does not blow, check the front panel is fully latched — most purifiers have a safety interlock that silently prevents the fan running when the panel is not seated. That is the single most common cause and it costs nothing.

Important

Before you open anything

  • Unplug before reaching into the fan housing. Some units restart automatically once the panel is refitted.
  • Do not defeat the panel safety interlock to make the unit run. It exists to keep fingers out of a spinning impeller.

Does this match your symptoms?

  • Lights and display work but no air comes out
  • Fan starts and immediately stops
  • Brand-new unit blows nothing
  • No response whatsoever

Work through the causes in this order

Ordered by how often each turns out to be the real cause — not by what it costs to fix. 3 of these cost nothing to resolve.

  1. Most commonYou can fix thisFree to fix

    1. Front panel not latched — safety interlock

    How to confirm it

Most purifiers refuse to run the fan unless the front panel is properly seated, and most give no error message explaining why. Remove and refit the panel firmly until the catches engage.

    The fix

Seat the panel correctly. Free, and it resolves a surprising proportion of 'dead' purifiers.

    2. Filter wrapper still fitted

    How to confirm it

On a new unit, or one with a newly fitted filter, check whether the filter's plastic packaging was removed. A sealed wrapper blocks airflow almost completely.

    The fix

Remove the wrapper and refit the filter. Free, and extremely common.

Part: None — free to fix

  3. CommonYou can fix this₹400 – ₹1,500

    3. No power reaching the unit

    How to confirm it

No lights and no fan. Test the socket with another appliance, inspect the cable and adaptor, and check any inline fuse.

    The fix

Replace the adaptor or cable if faulty. If the socket is fine and the adaptor is sound, the fault is internal.

    4. Jammed impeller

    How to confirm it

Unplug, remove the filters and look into the fan housing with a torch. Debris or hair wrapped around the hub can stall the fan entirely, and on some units the motor will then shut down protectively.

    The fix

Unplug, clear the obstruction carefully, and check the impeller spins freely by hand before reassembling.

Part: None — free to fix

    5. Failed fan motor or control board

    How to confirm it

Lights and display work, panel is seated, impeller spins freely, and the fan still does not start. That combination points at the motor or its driver circuit.

    The fix

Motor or board replacement. Get a quote before authorising — on an out-of-warranty budget unit this frequently exceeds what the machine is worth.

Part: Fan motor or control board

When to stop and call a technician

  • Panel is seated, impeller is clear, power is confirmed, and the fan still will not start
  • Any burning smell or visible scorching — unplug and stop
  • The unit is under warranty, in which case do not open it yourself

Costs shown are indicative bands for India, published so you can sanity-check a quote — they are not quotations, and they vary by brand, city and whether the technician is brand-authorised. Last reviewed 2026-08-08.

Frequently asked questions

My new air purifier is not blowing any air. What did I miss?
In order of likelihood: the plastic wrapper is still on the filter, or the front panel is not fully latched. Between them these explain the large majority of brand-new purifiers that appear dead on arrival, and both take seconds to check.
Is it worth repairing an air purifier motor?
It depends entirely on the unit's value. A motor or board replacement typically runs ₹1,500-5,000, which is reasonable on a ₹25,000 machine and poor economics on a ₹10,000 one. Get the quote first, and weigh it against a replacement whose filters are cheaper — filter economics matter more over five years than the purchase price does.
