Air purifier diagnostics

Your air purifier's filter has turned black

A blackening filter is the unit doing its job — that material would otherwise be in your lungs. It is only a problem if it happens far faster than expected, which points at your environment rather than the machine.

Does this match your symptoms?

  • Pre-filter grey or black with visible dust and hair
  • HEPA media darkened from white to grey
  • Filter appears dirty far sooner than the stated replacement interval

Work through the causes in this order

Ordered by how often each turns out to be the real cause — not by what it costs to fix. 3 of these cost nothing to resolve.

  1. Most commonYou can fix thisFree to fix

    1. Normal capture — the unit is working

    How to confirm it

Media darkens progressively and evenly, airflow is still strong, and PM2.5 still drops when you run it in a closed room. This is exactly what a working filter looks like.

    The fix

Nothing to fix. Clean the pre-filter, leave the HEPA alone until airflow drops or the interval elapses.

    Part: None

  2. Most commonYou can fix thisFree to fix

    2. Neglected pre-filter loading the HEPA

    How to confirm it

If the HEPA is darkening quickly and the pre-filter is matted with dust and hair, the pre-filter has stopped doing its job. It exists to catch the coarse material so the HEPA does not have to.

    The fix

Vacuum or wash the pre-filter monthly — in most Indian homes this is a monthly task, not an annual one — and let it dry completely before refitting. This is the single highest-value maintenance habit for an air purifier.

Part: None — free to fix

  3. CommonYou can fix this₹1,500 – ₹4,500

    3. Exceptionally high pollution load

    How to confirm it

Delhi-NCR in winter, a home on a main road, construction nearby, or indoor smoking will all load filters far faster than the manufacturer's rating assumes. Those ratings are not written for Indian winter.

    The fix

Budget for more frequent replacement than the box states, and prioritise models with cheap, widely available filters. Filter economics decide long-term ownership far more than purchase price.

Part: HEPA filter, more often than rated

  4. OccasionalYou can fix thisFree to fix

    4. Soot from indoor combustion

    How to confirm it

Greasy, sooty black deposits rather than dry grey dust suggest a combustion source — candles, incense, a kerosene appliance, mosquito coils or cooking without extraction. Wipe the deposit: soot smears, dust does not.

    The fix

Address the source. A purifier can capture combustion particulate, but it is an expensive way to deal with something you could stop generating — mosquito coils and incense in particular produce startling PM2.5 levels.

    Part: None

When to stop and call a technician

  • Airflow is weak even with a brand-new filter fitted
  • The HEPA is loading within weeks despite a clean pre-filter and no obvious pollution source

Costs shown are indicative bands for India, published so you can sanity-check a quote — they are not quotations, and they vary by brand, city and whether the technician is brand-authorised. Last reviewed 2026-08-08.

Frequently asked questions

How often should I replace an air purifier HEPA filter in India?
Manufacturer ratings of 12-24 months generally assume gentler conditions than Indian cities provide. In Delhi-NCR through winter, 8-12 months is more realistic; in a low-pollution city with a well-maintained pre-filter you may reach the rated life. Judge on airflow and appearance rather than on the indicator, which is usually a timer.
Can I vacuum the HEPA filter to extend its life?
Light vacuuming of the HEPA's surface is sometimes tolerated by manufacturers, but it recovers very little and risks damaging the pleats. The pre-filter is the component designed to be cleaned repeatedly — clean that monthly and the HEPA will reach its intended life on its own.
Is a black filter dangerous to handle?
Use ordinary sense rather than alarm. Change filters outdoors or by an open window, hold the used filter still rather than shaking it, bag it immediately, and wash your hands afterwards. If you are asthmatic, wear a mask while doing it.
