Our verdict

There are two genuinely defensible reasons to spend ₹55,000 here, and neither is the one Dyson's advertising leads with. The first is the fully-sealed HEPA H13 system: most purifiers have an H13 filter but a body that lets some air sneak around it, and Dyson certifies the whole machine. The second is formaldehyde, which is a real problem in homes with new engineered-wood furniture, and which Dyson destroys catalytically rather than trapping in a filter you must keep buying.

The sensing is also, straightforwardly, the best available. PM2.5, PM10, VOCs and NO2 with historical graphs turns your home's air into something you can reason about instead of guess at. And because it works as a fan, it does not spend nine months of the year in a cupboard, which is the fate of most Indian air purifiers.

But the value maths is brutal. On air actually cleaned per rupee, the Xiaomi beats it comfortably, and for a Delhi family the correct spend of ₹55,000 is three good purifiers covering three bedrooms rather than one beautiful one in the hall. Buy the Dyson if you want it and the budget is genuinely spare. Do not buy it believing it is the biggest health upgrade available at that price, because it is not.

What we like

  • Fully-sealed HEPA H13 system — unfiltered air cannot bypass the filter, which is rarer than you would think
  • Best sensing and reporting in the category: PM2.5, PM10, VOCs and NO2 with historical graphs
  • Catalytic formaldehyde filter genuinely never needs replacement

  • Exceptional build and design

What we don't

  • Extremely expensive — four Xiaomi units cost less
  • CADR per rupee is poor; you are paying for sensing, sealing and design
  • Loud at high fan speeds
  • Cooling is airflow only — it is not an air conditioner

When this is not a good choice

Every condition below is derived from this product's published specifications and from how it compares with the air purifiers we track — so you can check each one against your own room, supply or budget rather than take our word for it.

  • Your room is bigger than about 300 sq ft

It is rated for 600 sq ft, but that assumes roughly one air change an hour. For visible results in Indian winter conditions, halve it — which puts the realistic ceiling near 300 sq ft.

Work out the CADR you need
  • You need it quiet at the speed that actually works

It reaches 60 dB at its loudest setting. That is fine in a living room and intrusive in a bedroom, and the quiet modes on most purifiers move far less air.

    Compare noise across the database
  • You want the HEPA grade stated rather than implied

The brand claims HEPA filtration without naming a grade. H11 and H14 are very different filters, and only 2 of the 13 air purifiers we track name theirs.

See which brands publish a grade
  • Low running cost is a priority

Consumables and routine service run about ₹6,500 a year, which is in the most expensive quarter of the air purifiers we track. Over five years that puts total ownership near ₹87,400.

Sort the database by five-year cost
  • You live outside a metro or a major service town

Dyson's service network is rated good rather than excellent. Filter availability and callout times are what decide whether a purifier is still running in five years, and they are worth checking for your pin code before you buy.

About Dyson

The premium benchmark, and the only mainstream brand that publishes fully-sealed HEPA H13 filtration standards alongside formaldehyde destruction. You pay a large premium for design, app intelligence and the fan/heater dual function — but the sensing and reporting genuinely are the best in the category.

The data is what I love

Seeing VOC spikes when we cook or after we brought new furniture home genuinely changed how we ventilate the flat. Using it as a fan all summer means it never gets put away. Yes it is absurdly expensive.

Dyson Purifier Cool Formaldehyde TP09 — frequently asked questions

Is a Dyson air purifier worth the money?
It is worth it for the fully-sealed HEPA H13 system, the best-in-class sensing of PM2.5, PM10, VOCs and NO2, and the catalytic formaldehyde filter that never needs replacing — plus the fan function that keeps it useful year-round. It is not worth it if your goal is maximum air cleaned per rupee: two or three Philips or Xiaomi units covering more bedrooms will deliver a bigger real-world health improvement for the same spend.
