About this water purifier
- Genuinely removes bacteria and viruses without electricity or plumbing
- 23-litre body means a family can store a full day's drinking water
- Germkill kit costs a few hundred rupees and is available in almost every kirana-adjacent retail outlet
- Auto shut-off when the kit expires, same safety philosophy as Pureit's RO range
How it scores
Our verdict
It is worth pausing on what this product achieved. Before it existed, safe drinking water in India effectively required either an electricity connection and ₹15,000, or an hour of boiling fuel every day. The Classic Gravity delivers verified microbiological safety for under ₹1,500 with no power and no plumbing, and it is still the single highest-impact purchase on this entire website for a large number of Indian households.
The limitation is absolute and non-negotiable: it does not touch dissolved solids. On Chennai's brackish summer supply or a Rajasthan borewell it is the wrong tool. On Kerala, Srinagar or treated municipal supply where your real risk is post-monsoon contamination, it is close to perfect.
What we like
- Genuinely removes bacteria and viruses without electricity or plumbing
- 23-litre body means a family can store a full day's drinking water
- Germkill kit costs a few hundred rupees and is available in almost every kirana-adjacent retail outlet
- Auto shut-off when the kit expires, same safety philosophy as Pureit's RO range
What we don't
- Zero TDS reduction — wrong product for borewell or brackish supply
- Filling it twice a day is tedious
- Plastic body feels cheap because it is cheap
When this is not a good choice
Every condition below is derived from this product's published specifications and from how it compares with the water purifiers we track — so you can check each one against your own room, supply or budget rather than take our word for it.
Your supply runs above 200 ppm TDS
It is suited to supply up to about 200 ppm. Above that this technology removes nothing dissolved, so the water will be disinfected but not desalinated.
Purifiers for high-TDS supply →Your area has documented arsenic, fluoride or nitrate contamination
There is no reverse-osmosis stage. UV and UF deal with bacteria, viruses and cysts, and remove nothing dissolved — so against those contaminants this offers no protection at all, whatever the TDS reading says.

About Pureit
HUL's purifier arm, and the brand that democratised safe water with the non-electric Classic gravity unit. The Copper+ RO and Marvella lines are the modern range; Pureit's differentiator is a genuinely enforced filter-life cut-off that stops dispensing when the germkill kit expires — annoying but honest.
