Calcium in water — the mineral behind most scale, and why removing it is optional

Calcium is a dissolved mineral that, with magnesium, makes up total hardness, and is the principal component of the white scale that forms on heating elements and taps.

Limits and standards

BIS publishes two figures for many parameters: an acceptable limit, and a permissible limit that applies only where no alternate source of water exists. The second is a fallback for communities without a choice — not a target to design a purchase around.

Where it comes from

  • Limestone and dolomite

    Dissolution of carbonate rock is the dominant natural source of calcium in groundwater.

  • Gypsum-bearing formations

    Contribute calcium alongside sulphate, which is why high-calcium water is sometimes also high in sulphate and tastes bitter.

  • Lime dosing in treatment

    Municipal pH correction adds a small amount of calcium to treated surface water.

Why it matters

  • Calcium carbonate scale insulates heating elements. A scaled geyser element consumes measurably more electricity to deliver the same hot water and fails earlier.
  • It reacts with soap to form the residue that leaves surfaces filmy and lather poor.
  • It is not a contaminant in the health sense. WHO's work on this treats drinking water as one contributor to total dietary calcium among many.
  • Removing it entirely — as RO does — is not harmful in a normal diet, but it is also not automatically beneficial.

Can you detect it yourself?

This is the section most purifier buying decisions skip. A handheld TDS meter is the instrument almost every Indian household is shown, and for most contaminants that matter it reads exactly the same whether the contaminant is present or not.

How to detect Calcium

When to pay for a laboratory test

  • You are sizing a softener and want calcium and magnesium separately rather than only total hardness.
  • You have unexplained rapid scaling despite a moderate total hardness figure — the calcium-to-magnesium ratio and the alkalinity both matter and only a lab reports them.

What removes it

Effectiveness ratings below describe the technology working correctly, within its service life, on water or air that suits it. “Depends” means there is a condition in the caveat that decides the outcome — read it before buying.

  • Ion exchange softenerEffective

    Near-complete

    The purpose-built answer. Resin exchanges calcium for sodium across the whole house.

    Caveat: Sodium is added in proportion. Keep the drinking tap unsoftened where sodium intake is a concern.

  • Reverse osmosis (RO)Effective

    95–98%

    Removes calcium along with all other dissolved solids, at the drinking tap.

  • Antiscalant dosingPartial

    Keeps calcium in solution so it does not deposit. Prevents scale without removing calcium.

  • Template-assisted crystallisationDepends

    Reduces scale adhesion. Calcium remains in the water, so lather does not improve.

What does not work

Each of these is commonly assumed — or actively marketed — to help with calcium. None of them do.

  • UV, UF, sediment and carbon filtration

    None of them remove dissolved calcium. This is the entire mineral-removal question in one line: only RO, softening or distillation touch it.

  • Boiling

    Precipitates temporary hardness as the scale in your kettle, but the water you pour still carries permanent hardness and the process is not a treatment.

  • Magnetic descalers

    No accepted mechanism and no reliable independent evidence.

Frequently asked questions

Should I remove calcium from my drinking water?
Not for health reasons — there is no health-based limit for calcium and drinking water is one dietary contributor among several. Remove it if you have a scale problem, and in that case treat the whole house with a softener rather than only the drinking tap.
Does RO remove calcium?
Yes, typically 95 to 98%. That is why RO output is soft and why RO water does not leave deposits. It is also why some units add a mineral cartridge afterwards, which puts a small amount back for taste.
Is calcium the same as hardness?
Not quite. Total hardness is calcium plus magnesium, expressed together as equivalent calcium carbonate. Calcium is usually the larger share, so the two track each other closely, but a hardness figure alone does not tell you the split.
What causes white deposits on my taps?
Calcium carbonate — dissolved calcium precipitating out as water evaporates on the surface. It is a hardness symptom. Vinegar or a mild acid removes existing deposits; a softener stops new ones forming.
