🧊 Air conditioner guide

Choosing an AC for Offices, Shops, Restaurants, Gyms and Clinics

7 min readPublished 14 September 2026Updated

Why commercial spaces need more tonnage

Home sizing assumes two people and ordinary lighting. A shop, office or restaurant adds heat from every source: each seated person gives off roughly 600 BTU/h, computers and monitors several hundred more each, commercial lighting more again, a glass shopfront a large solar load, and a door opening every few minutes lets the cool air out. The same 200 sq ft that is a 1.5 ton bedroom can be a 2.5 ton shop.

SpaceExtra heat sourcesSizing rule of thumb
Small office / cabinPeople, PCs, monitorsHome size + 600 BTU/h per person beyond two + equipment

Retail shop / showroomGlass front, lighting, door trafficOften 1.5-2× a home room of the same area
Restaurant / cafeKitchen heat, diners, door trafficSeparate kitchen extraction; get a heat-load calculation
SalonHair dryers, straighteners, peopleAdd generously for appliances
GymExercising people, equipmentMuch higher per person; professional calculation
ClinicEquipment, waiting patientsSize for peak waiting-room occupancy

Efficiency repays faster at business hours

The BEE label assumes 1,600 hours a year. An office or shop open 10-12 hours a day, six days a week runs 3,000 hours or more — double the label. At that level, the running-cost gap between a 3-star and a 5-star 1.5 ton unit roughly doubles, and a ₹10,000-₹15,000 premium typically repays in three to five years rather than eight to ten.

When wall splits stop being the answer

  • Up to about two rooms or 400 sq ft: wall-mounted inverter splits sized per room work well.
  • Large open offices, showrooms and restaurants: several splits blow unevenly; ceiling cassette units spread air better.
  • Multi-room offices: ductable or VRF systems can serve many rooms from fewer outdoor units.
  • Gyms and restaurants: get a heat-load calculation from a qualified HVAC installer before buying anything.

Service matters more than at home

Ask the brand or dealer for their response time for a breakdown at your address, in writing, and consider an annual maintenance contract before summer. Voltas and Blue Star, whose core business is cooling, run the widest commercial and residential service networks.

Frequently asked questions

Which AC is best for a small office?
An inverter split sized for occupancy and equipment, and 5-star if the office runs long hours. For a cabin up to about 190 sq ft, Blue Star's IC718QCUS (ISEER 5.85) or Lloyd's GLS18V5AGGGW (ISEER 5.75) repay their efficiency quickly. For larger rooms, a true 2 ton or two units.
What AC is best for a restaurant or cafe?
Get a heat-load calculation from an HVAC installer. Diners, door traffic and kitchen heat make restaurants hard to size by rule of thumb, and ceiling cassettes or ductable systems usually cool a dining room more evenly than several wall splits. Keep the kitchen on separate extraction.
What AC is best for a gym?
A professionally sized system. Exercising people give off several times the heat of seated people, and gyms have high humidity. Undersized wall splits run flat out and still leave the room warm.
