Body Grooming for Men: How to Do It Safely

8 min readPublished 6 May 2026Updated

The one rule that prevents nearly every problem

Do not use your beard trimmer on your body. This is the single most common mistake in body grooming and it is the reason most men who try it once give up.

The reason is blade geometry rather than hygiene. Face trimmer teeth are square-profiled, because facial skin is taut over bone and a square tooth cuts against it cleanly. Groin, underarm and inner-thigh skin is loose and mobile, and under almost no pressure it folds into the gap between those square teeth. That fold is exactly where a nick happens, and no amount of care prevents it because the geometry is wrong for the surface.

A dedicated body groomer solves it at the blade. Philips uses rounded tips on the BG1025 and pearl tips on the BG3470, where every tooth is rounded off so no sharp edge can reach skin at all. Bombay Shaving Company and Menhood use ceramic blades with rounded tips, adding a second benefit: ceramic conducts far less heat than steel, so the blade stays cool through a long session on already-sensitive skin.

Important

Never use a zero-gap or zero-cut trimmer below the neck. Those blades sit flush against the skin with no guard at all — that is what makes them good at beard lines and genuinely dangerous on loose skin.

Trim, do not shave

Shaving body hair to zero is the primary cause of ingrown hairs and razor bumps in these areas, for the same reason it is on a face: a hair cut below the skin line grows back into the follicle rather than out of it. Body hair is often coarser and curlier than facial hair, which makes the problem worse.

Leaving 2 to 3 mm achieves nearly the same visual result — from normal distance, groomed is groomed — with dramatically fewer problems. This is why every well-designed body groomer ships with guards starting at 2 or 3 mm rather than expecting you to work bare. If you want a genuinely closer finish in a specific area, use a body groomer with a dedicated foil head rather than running a bare trimmer blade over loose skin.

Technique, area by area

  • Groin — work on clean, dry or lightly damp skin. Use a 2-3 mm guard. Never stretch or pull the skin taut against the blade; let the trimmer's own weight do the work. Move slowly across folds and contours, and check the guard is seated properly before each session.
  • Underarms — hair grows in multiple directions here, so work in short strokes following each patch rather than one long stroke. A pivoting head helps considerably.
  • Chest — the easiest area, and the one where a longer guard usually looks better than a short one. Work against the grain for evenness, with the grain if your skin objects.
  • Back and shoulders — you cannot reach the middle of your own back at a usable angle with a standard body groomer. You need either a long-handle back attachment (Philips sells a showerproof body trimmer designed for exactly this) or another person. Work in the shower with a mirror, use a 3 mm or longer guard, and move slowly since you are working largely blind.
  • Legs — the lowest-risk area. Any guard length works; the main consideration is time, since it is a large surface.

Hygiene and maintenance

Keep a separate device for body grooming. This is partly the blade-geometry argument above and partly straightforward hygiene — a trimmer used on the groin should not then be used on your face. Rinse it after every use, which is only practical if the device is genuinely IPX7 rather than head-washable.

Ceramic blades resist corrosion better than steel in a device used regularly in the shower, which is one reason the dedicated Indian body groomers use them. Whatever the blade, dry the device before storing it and do not leave it sitting in a wet shower caddy.

What to buy in India

On the Manscaped question our answer is direct. The Lawn Mower is genuinely well engineered, but Manscaped has no official Indian distribution — units here are grey imports at ₹11,000 to ₹15,000 against roughly US$90 at home, with no local warranty, no service path, and no reliable supply of the replacement cartridges the design needs every three months at about ₹2,200. The Philips BG3470 at ₹2,399 does the same core job with a claimable two-year warranty and zero running cost.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use my beard trimmer for body and pubic hair?
You can, but you should not. Face trimmers have square-profile blade teeth designed to cut against taut facial skin, whereas body, groin and underarm skin is loose and folds into the blade — which is exactly how nicks happen. A dedicated body groomer uses rounded or pearl-tipped blade tips and different guard geometry designed for that skin. There is also a straightforward hygiene argument for keeping the two devices separate.
Should I trim or shave body hair?
Trim. Shaving body hair to zero is the primary cause of ingrown hairs and razor bumps, because a hair cut below the skin line grows back into the follicle rather than out of it. Leaving 2-3 mm achieves nearly the same visual result with dramatically fewer problems, which is why good body groomers ship with guards starting at 2 or 3 mm. For a closer finish, use a body groomer with a dedicated foil head rather than a bare blade.
How do I trim my own back hair?
You need either a long-handle back attachment or another person — a standard body groomer cannot reach the middle of your own back at a usable angle. Philips sells a showerproof body trimmer with a dedicated extendable back attachment designed for exactly this, which is the only reliable single-handed solution. Work in the shower with a mirror, use a 3 mm or longer guard, and move slowly since you are working largely blind.
What is the best Manscaped alternative in India?
The Philips BG3470 at ₹2,399, or the Philips BG1025 and Bombay Shaving Company BLO at ₹1,499 on a budget. Manscaped has no official Indian distribution, so Lawn Mower units are grey imports at ₹11,000-₹15,000 with no local warranty and no reliable route to the replacement cartridges the design needs every three months. The Philips options deliver the same rounded-tip skin safety and shower use with a claimable two-year warranty.
