The ruling

Mostly false, and dangerously so in specific cases. A rolling boil for one minute inactivates bacteria, viruses and protozoa completely — for microbiological risk, boiling is the correct emergency response and it is free. But it removes no dissolved chemical contaminant, and because it removes water as steam it concentrates whatever remains. Boiling water containing arsenic, fluoride, nitrate or lead leaves you with the same quantity of contaminant in less water.

Boiling inactivates organisms through heat. Non-volatile dissolved substances do not evaporate, so as water leaves as steam their concentration in what remains rises.

  1. 1WHO recommends bringing water to a rolling boil as a household treatment for microbiological safety. At the temperatures reached, bacteria, viruses and protozoan cysts are all inactivated.
  2. 2Arsenic, fluoride, nitrate, lead and dissolved salts are not volatile at 100 °C. They remain in the liquid phase while water leaves as vapour.
  3. 3Boiling away 10% of a pot's volume therefore raises the concentration of everything non-volatile in it by roughly 11%.
  4. 4Nitrate is the case that matters most, because BIS's 45 mg/L limit exists principally to protect infants under six months, and boiling is precisely what a carer does before making up formula.
  5. 5Free chlorine is volatile and is largely driven off within a few minutes of boiling — a genuine benefit and one of the very few chemical ones.
  6. 6Temporary hardness precipitates as scale on boiling, which is the deposit in a kettle. Permanent hardness remains in the water.

What is true in the claim

Every durable myth has a grain of truth, and pretending otherwise teaches nobody anything.

For the risk that kills people fastest — microbiological contamination — boiling is complete, immediate, free and requires nothing to be installed. In an outbreak or after a supply interruption it is the correct advice, and dismissing it entirely would be worse than overstating it.

What it means for your purchase

  • Boil during and after any suspected contamination event. It works, it costs nothing, and it is available immediately.
  • Do not boil water for an infant if nitrate is a possibility. Get the water tested first — this is the clearest single testing recommendation on this site.
  • Boiling is not a treatment system. It is an interim and emergency measure, and treating it as a permanent substitute for appropriate treatment is where the myth does harm.
  • If your problem is chemical rather than microbiological, boiling makes it marginally worse rather than better.

  • Boiling time recommendations vary with altitude. At most Indian elevations a one-minute rolling boil is sufficient.
