The claim: “Higher fan speed always means better air purification”
Does a higher fan speed always clean the air better?
The ruling
It depends, and the honest answer is more useful than either simple one. Within a given unit, higher fan speed does deliver more clean air per hour — CADR scales roughly with airflow, so the physics supports the claim. What the claim ignores is that the highest speed on most units is loud enough that households do not use it, particularly overnight in a bedroom. A machine running at maximum for one hour and off for eight delivers less clean air than one running all night at a speed someone can sleep beside.

CADR under ANSI/AHAM AC-1 is a function of airflow through the filter. Airflow scales with fan speed, so the mechanism is straightforward — the question is which speed the unit actually runs at in a home.
- 1Clean Air Delivery Rate is measured as the volume of particle-free air delivered per hour. Since capture efficiency per pass is roughly constant for a given filter, delivered clean air scales with airflow.
- 2Manufacturers quote CADR at maximum fan speed, because that produces the largest number. Coverage claims derived from it inherit that assumption.
- 3In practice, the bedroom is where a purifier runs longest, and the constraint there is noise rather than capability. Above roughly 45 dB(A) at 1 m, few people will sleep next to a unit.
- 4Total exposure reduction depends on hours of operation multiplied by delivery rate. Eight hours at a moderate speed beats one hour at maximum by a wide margin, and eight hours at maximum beats both — if anyone could sleep through it.
- 5Filter loading also scales with the volume of air processed, so running at maximum shortens filter life and raises annual cost.

What it means for your purchase
- When shopping, ask what the unit delivers at its quietest usable speed, not its maximum. That is the figure your bedroom will actually experience.
- Size the unit so that its mid-range speed meets your air-change target. Then maximum is headroom for pollution episodes rather than the normal operating point.
- During a smoke episode, run at maximum while you are awake and accept a lower speed overnight — the total delivered is what matters, not the peak.
- A dB figure is only comparable if it states measurement distance, weighting and background level. Most marketing figures state none of the three.
