Our verdict

A Brita jug is a taste appliance, not a safety appliance, and conflating the two is genuinely dangerous. It will make chlorinated municipal water pleasant to drink and stop your kettle furring up. It will not protect you from bacteria, and it will not reduce TDS by any meaningful amount.

Used for what it is — a desk jug in an office, a travel companion, a way to make already-safe water taste better — it is a good product. As your household's primary drinking water protection in an Indian city, it is the wrong purchase.

What we like

  • Zero installation, fully portable, no electricity
  • Genuinely effective at removing chlorine taste and smell
  • Reduces limescale, so useful for kettles and coffee machines

What we don't

  • Does not remove bacteria — this is not a safety device for untreated water
  • No TDS reduction at all
  • Cost per litre is high and cartridges need changing monthly

About Brita

The global leader in filter jugs. Brita is not an RO alternative — its activated-carbon and ion-exchange cartridges improve taste, cut chlorine and reduce limescale, but they do not remove dissolved salts, so they cannot fix high-TDS Indian groundwater. Excellent for low-TDS municipal supply, travel and offices.

Brita Marella Filter Jug — frequently asked questions

Does a Brita filter remove bacteria and TDS?
No to both. Brita's MAXTRA cartridges use activated carbon and ion exchange, which reduce chlorine taste, odour and limescale, and some metals. They do not remove bacteria, viruses or dissolved salts. Never use a filter jug as your only protection for water of uncertain microbiological quality.
