ZeroWater is the interesting outlier: an ion-exchange jug that actually does reduce dissolved solids, verifiably, with the meter included so you can prove it. For a hostel room or a short lease where drilling a wall is impossible, that capability has no real competitor.
Against that, Brita Marella Filter Jug makes its case differently: A Brita jug is a taste appliance, not a safety appliance, and conflating the two is genuinely dangerous. It will make chlorinated municipal water pleasant to drink and stop your kettle furring up. It will not protect you from bacteria, and it will not reduce TDS by any meaningful amount.
