A TDS controller — Aquaguard calls it MTDS, KENT calls it a TDS controller — blends a small, adjustable amount of unpurified (but UF-filtered) water back into the RO output. The purpose is to put back some of the calcium and magnesium that reverse osmosis strips out, so the water tastes like water instead of tasting like nothing.

This matters more than most buyers realise. RO output at 20-30 ppm is technically pure and genuinely unpleasant to drink — flat, slightly metallic, and the reason many people say purified water 'tastes wrong'. Blending back to 60-120 ppm produces water that tastes clean and full.

It also future-proofs your purchase. If your supply switches between municipal water in the monsoon and tanker water in summer — normal in Bengaluru, Gurugram and Chennai — a fixed-ratio purifier will over-strip in one season and under-purify in the other. A TDS controller lets you adjust.

The Bureau of Indian Standards (IS 10500) sets an acceptable limit of 500 ppm, with 2,000 ppm as the permissible maximum where no alternative source exists. For taste and mineral content, most people find 50-150 ppm ideal. Below about 30 ppm water tastes flat; above 500 ppm it starts tasting brackish. A TDS controller lets you land in the pleasant range.

Is 0 TDS water bad for you?

It is not acutely dangerous, but it is not ideal either. Near-zero-TDS water lacks the calcium and magnesium that contribute a small but real part of your dietary mineral intake, and the WHO has published on the drawbacks of demineralised drinking water. It also tastes flat, which means people drink less of it. Use a TDS controller to keep output around 60-120 ppm.

How do I check my water's TDS?

Buy a digital TDS meter — they cost around ₹300 online. Dip it in a glass of your tap water and read the ppm value. Test at different times of year if your supply changes seasonally, and test the purifier's output too so you can verify it is working and adjust the TDS controller.
