Buying an AC for a Rented Flat, PG or Hostel Room

6 min readPublished 14 September 2026Updated

Window or split when you rent

A split AC can move with you, but each move costs money: uninstallation, reinstallation, often new copper pipe to suit the new wall, and sometimes a gas top-up if refrigerant is lost. A window AC is simply removed and refitted. If you expect to move once or twice in the next few years, a window AC is usually cheaper overall.

If you will stay several years and run the AC for long hours, a split's lower running cost — 3-star inverter splits run ISEER 4.3-4.5 against 3.13-3.4 for 3-star window ACs — outweighs the moving cost.

  • Budget window AC: Blue Star WFE312L 1 ton 3-star, ₹24,890
  • 1.5 ton window AC: Blue Star WFE318L 3-star, ₹28,190
  • Inverter window AC for long hours: Lloyd GLW18I3AGSPR 1.5 ton, ₹32,990
  • Small split for a PG room: Blue Star IA309TNU 0.8 ton inverter, ₹27,990

Before you buy: landlord, wiring and metering

  • A split AC needs a core-cut through the wall for the copper pipe and a bracket for the outdoor unit. Get written permission, and agree who pays to seal the hole when you leave.
  • A window AC needs a window or wall opening of the right size and a strong support.
  • Check the socket and wiring. A 1.5-2 ton AC should have a dedicated suitably rated socket, not a shared extension.
  • In a PG or hostel, ask whether your room has a sub-meter and what rate you are charged. A 1 ton window AC can use 5-7 units on a long summer night.

Renting an AC instead

AC rental services charge a monthly fee that includes installation and maintenance. It is sensible for a single summer or a short posting. Over two or three summers the rental usually adds up to more than buying a budget window AC outright, so compare the total before signing.

Frequently asked questions

Which AC is best for a rented flat?
A window AC if you may move within a couple of years and the landlord will not allow an outdoor unit — Blue Star's WFE312L (1 ton, ₹24,890) or Lloyd's GLW18I3AGSPR inverter (1.5 ton, ₹32,990). A split AC if you will stay several years and run it for long hours.
What does it cost to move a split AC to a new flat?
It varies by city and installer, but budget for uninstallation, reinstallation, any extra copper pipe and possibly a gas top-up. Get a quote before moving — for an older or low-cost unit, the total can make a new window AC the cheaper choice.
Which AC is best for a 1 BHK?
Usually one AC in the bedroom, sized to the room — a 1 ton for a 10 × 12 ft bedroom, a 1.5 ton for 12 × 14 ft. If the living room is used heavily in the day, a second 1.5 ton AC there is more effective than one large AC trying to cool both through a doorway.
