When to choose a split AC

For a room you own or will live in for years, and will cool for long hours, a split is better in every way that matters daily: it is far quieter, noticeably cheaper to run, cools more evenly and leaves the window free. The extra purchase and installation cost is repaid by the electricity saving on a room used every night.

When a window AC is the right answer

  • You rent and may move within a couple of years — a window AC avoids repeated uninstall and reinstall charges.
  • The landlord will not allow an outdoor unit or a core-cut through the wall.
  • Your budget is under about ₹30,000 — Blue Star's WFE312L 1 ton is ₹24,890 and WFE318L 1.5 ton ₹28,190.
  • The AC is for occasional use, where noise and running cost matter less.

Frequently asked questions

Is a window AC cheaper to run than a split AC?
No. It is cheaper to buy and install, but less efficient. The 3-star window ACs we compare have ISEER 3.13-3.4 against 4.3-4.5 for 3-star inverter splits, so a split uses roughly a quarter less electricity for the same cooling.
Which is better for a rented house, split or window AC?
Usually a window AC, if the room has a suitable window. It needs no outdoor unit or wall core-cut, and moving it costs little. A split AC can be moved, but uninstallation, reinstallation and often a gas top-up add up at every move.
Is a window AC louder than a split AC?
Yes, noticeably. The compressor is inside the box, so window ACs publish 53-56 dB(A), while split ACs publish as low as 27-34 dB(A) at their lowest fan speed. For a bedroom, a split is much easier to sleep with.
