Electric Shaver and Trimmer Maintenance: The Complete Guide

The part nobody tells first-time buyers about

Foils, rotary head sets and OneBlade blades are wear parts, not permanent components. They dull gradually enough that most owners never notice a specific day it got worse — they simply find themselves pressing harder, going over the same patch twice, and eventually concluding the shaver has 'stopped working properly'. It has not. It needs a part.

This matters financially in both directions. It means a ₹45,000 Braun running on an exhausted cassette shaves worse than a ₹3,299 Philips with fresh heads, which is a waste of a very good machine. It also means a shaver you were about to replace may need ₹2,200 rather than ₹30,000.

Replacement intervals and costs in India

Note the pattern: Panasonic blade sets cost the most upfront but last two to three years, so the annual running cost is lower than Braun's despite the higher part price. And Philips self-sharpening trimmers cost nothing at all to run, which is why they are cheaper to own over five years than trimmers costing half as much.

Cleaning, properly

IPX7 devices — rinse the whole device under running water after every use, shake off the excess and let it air-dry before storing. Ten seconds, and it is the single biggest factor in longevity.
Head-washable devices (most Philips BT trimmers) — detach the head, rinse it, and brush the housing. Do not run water over the body; it is not sealed and this is not covered by warranty.
Never tap a trimmer against a hard surface to dislodge hair. It knocks blades out of alignment, which causes pulling.
Do not use soap, alcohol or cleaning sprays on blades unless the manufacturer specifies them. Water is sufficient and does not degrade coatings.
Dry the device before storing. Leaving a shaver in a wet shower caddy corrodes steel blades and shortens battery life.
If you have a cleaning station, use it. Automatic cleaning and lubrication measurably extends cassette life, which on a Braun Series 9 is real money.

To oil or not to oil

This is the maintenance question people get wrong most often, and the answer is device-specific rather than universal.

Do NOT oil self-sharpening blades. Philips DuraPower and DualCut and Panasonic nanopolished blades are designed to hone themselves, and adding oil attracts hair and dust into the mechanism. Philips states this explicitly, and it applies to the whole BT and MG range.

DO oil professional clippers and conventional steel blades. Wahl clippers need a few drops of clipper oil along the blade every few uses, run for a few seconds, then wiped. Skipping it causes the blades to heat, drag and dull prematurely — and it is the most common reason a professional clipper starts pulling hair.

If you are unsure, check the manual. As a rule of thumb: if the marketing says 'self-sharpening' or 'no oil needed', leave it alone. If the box included a small bottle of oil, use it.

Buying genuine replacement parts in India

Counterfeit replacement heads and blades are widespread on Indian marketplace third-party sellers, particularly for Philips and Braun. A counterfeit foil is thinner, dulls in weeks and can be genuinely uncomfortable, which is worse than the worn part you replaced.

Buy from the brand's official marketplace storefront or its own site rather than a third-party seller, check that the part number matches exactly (SH30, 94M, QP210 and so on), and be sceptical of any listing priced far below the rest. On a part you will use for eighteen months, saving ₹400 is a poor trade.

Frequently asked questions

When should I replace my electric shaver head?

Braun recommends replacing cassettes every 18 months, Philips rotary head sets every two years, and Philips OneBlade blades every four months; Panasonic blade sets typically last two to three years. But the real signal is behavioural rather than calendar-based: if you find yourself pressing harder or making extra passes over the same area, the head is worn. Do not wait for a visual sign — foils rarely look damaged.

Should I oil my trimmer or shaver blades?

Only if the manufacturer says so. Philips self-sharpening DuraPower and DualCut blades and Panasonic nanopolished blades explicitly do not need oil, and adding it attracts hair and dust into the mechanism.
