Foil vs Rotary Shaver: Which Electric Razor Is Right for Your Face?

A foil cuts hair flush at the surface. A rotary lifts hair and cuts it as it twists. Everything else — closeness, comfort, ingrown hairs, how well the machine handles your jawline — follows from that single mechanical difference.

Which means this is a decision about your face and your skin, not about your budget or which brand you trust. There are excellent foils at ₹5,299 and excellent rotaries at ₹3,299, and buying the wrong system at any price will disappoint you.

• Step 1 — Do you get ingrown hairs, razor bumps or post-shave rash? If yes, buy a foil. Lifting hair before cutting is what causes retraction below the skin line, and rotaries lift by design.
• Step 2 — Do you shave your head? If yes, buy a rotary. A scalp is entirely curved and a flat foil will skip across it no matter how carefully you work.
• Step 3 — Is your jaw strongly angular, or does your neck hair grow in swirls? Rotary heads flex independently and follow that; foils lose contact.
• Step 4 — Is your beard coarse, dense and fast-growing? Prioritise motor speed over cutting system. Panasonic's 14,000 CPM linear drive cuts it faster than anything else sold here.
• Step 5 — None of the above? Buy a foil. On a normal face with normal skin, a foil shaves closer, and closeness is why most people buy an electric shaver.

A large share of Indian men have coarse, dense, fast-growing facial hair, often with strongly swirling growth on the neck. That combination is the hardest load an electric shaver faces, and it exposes slow motors immediately: instead of cutting on contact, the blade pushes the hair over, bends it and catches it on the second pass. That is the tug you feel, and it is why you press harder — which is what actually causes irritation.

This is why Panasonic deserves more attention in India than its retail presence suggests. On a coarse beard the difference is measured in passes, and owners moving from a mid-range rotary routinely report halving their shave time.

The counterweight is support. Braun has authorised service centres in metros and a reliable cassette supply; Panasonic's Indian distribution is thin, many Arc units arrive as imports with unclear warranty status, and WES-series blade sets often have to be ordered rather than bought. On a ₹28,000 purchase, that is a real consideration.

This is the part of electric shaving that first-time buyers do not know exists, and it changes the ranking. Foils and rotary heads are wear parts, not permanent components, and a shaver running on three-year-old heads shaves noticeably worse than a new budget model — which is why so many owners conclude their expensive shaver 'stopped working' when it needed a part.

Braun Series 9 cassettes are roughly ₹6,000 every 12 to 18 months, about ₹4,000 a year. A Series 3 cassette is ₹2,400 every 18 months. Philips SH30 rotary head sets are about ₹2,200 every two years, and Havells heads around ₹700. Panasonic blade sets cost more upfront but last two to three years, so the running cost is actually the lowest of the premium options.

Run the five-year number before comparing sticker prices. It frequently reverses the answer you would guess from the shelf.
