About this refrigerator

  • 108 units/year is the lowest declared consumption of any mainstream 185 L unit — roughly ₹870 a year to run, and that gap compounds over a ten-year life
  • The 10-year Smart Inverter compressor warranty is the longest in the segment and LG honours it without argument
  • Runs from 100 V, so it rides out the voltage sag that kills compressors in small towns without a separate stabiliser
  • Toughened glass shelves rather than wire — they hold a full pressure cooker and wipe clean after a spill

Our verdict

This is the fridge we recommend to the largest number of people, and the reason is entirely the electricity bill. A refrigerator is the one appliance in an Indian home that runs 8,760 hours a year, and the difference between this unit's 108 declared units and a 3-star competitor's 180 is around ₹580 a year. Over a ten-year life that is nearly ₹6,000, which is a third of what the fridge cost. Buyers reliably underweight this because the star label is abstract and the price tag is not.

What you give up is frost-free operation. Once a month, ice builds up in the freezer box thickly enough that you have to switch off, empty it and wait. If that sounds like an unacceptable chore, you want a double door and you should budget about ₹8,000 more. If it sounds like a minor Sunday task, this is a better machine than anything else at the price — the 100 V stabiliser-free range in particular is worth real money in a town with unstable supply, because compressor failure from voltage swing is not covered as generously as brochures imply.

Buy it for one or two people, a bachelor flat, a second fridge, or as the sensible default for a couple who cook a few times a week. Do not buy it for a family of four — 165 L usable will be over-packed within a month, and an over-packed fridge blocks its own airflow and cools worse while drawing more power.

What we like

What we don't

  • Direct cool means you defrost it by hand, roughly monthly, and there is no way around that at this price
  • 165 L of usable space is genuinely tight for more than two people who cook daily
  • The freezer compartment is a box inside the cabinet, not a separate zone — open the door and the frozen food warms too

About LG

LG's purifiers are the premium engineering choice: stainless-steel tanks instead of plastic, dual-protection UV that sterilises the tank and the tap, and a self-sterilising cycle. If tank hygiene is your concern — and with Indian ambient temperatures it should be — this is the answer. In refrigerators, LG is the most consistently recommended brand in India: the Smart Inverter Compressor carries a ten-year warranty, holds temperature within a tighter band than reciprocating designs, and runs quietly enough to be unobtrusive in an open-plan flat.

LG 185 L 5 Star Direct Cool Single Door GL-D201ASPZ — frequently asked questions

How often do you have to defrost the LG GL-D201ASPZ?
Roughly once a month in normal use, more often in a humid coastal summer and less in a dry winter. Ice builds on the freezer box, and once it is about 5 mm thick it starts insulating the cooling plate — which makes the fridge work harder and cost more to run. Switch it off, leave the door open with a tray underneath, and it clears in 30-40 minutes. Never chip the ice off with a knife; puncturing the evaporator is the one repair that is not worth doing.
Is a 5 star single door worth the extra money over a 3 star?
Yes, on a ten-year view, and the arithmetic is not close. This unit declares 108 units a year against roughly 180 for a typical 3-star of the same size. At ₹8 a unit that is about ₹580 a year, so the ₹2,500-3,000 premium pays for itself in around five years and every year after that is profit. The caveat is the label period: a 5-star from an older BEE window is often a 3-star under the current one, so check that the label says 2023-2025 rather than trusting the star count alone.
Does it need a stabiliser?
No. It is rated to run from 100 V to 290 V, which covers essentially any Indian domestic supply including the deep sags common in small towns during summer peak. That is a genuine saving of ₹2,000-3,000 and one less box behind the fridge. A separate stabiliser is only worth considering if your supply routinely drops below 100 V, which is rare enough that you would already know.
