Choose Air purifier if…

  • Air quality is the problem — dust, PM2.5, pollen, smoke, odours.
  • Anyone at home has asthma, allergic rhinitis or eczema aggravated by dust mites.
  • You live somewhere humid, where a cooler does little cooling and a lot of dampening.

Choose Air cooler (evaporative) if…

  • Cooling is the problem, your climate is genuinely dry (much of Rajasthan, inland Maharashtra, Delhi in May), and you accept the humidity and open-window trade-offs.

Why the cooler's pad is not a filter

Evaporative cooling works by pulling outdoor air through a wetted honeycomb or wood-wool pad. Some coarse dust gets caught on the wet surface, and this is occasionally marketed as a purification benefit. It is not one — the pad has openings measured in millimetres and no gas-phase media at all, and it is saturated with standing water.

In practice, on a bad-air day a cooler is a mechanism for importing outdoor PM2.5 into your bedroom at a high flow rate. That is fine in April in Jodhpur. It is not fine in November in Delhi.

The humidity trade-off, quantified

Evaporative cooling exchanges heat for moisture: the water that cools the air ends up in the air. A cooler running in a closed-ish room will typically take relative humidity from 35% to somewhere between 55% and 75%.

Dust mites thrive above about 50% RH, and mould germinates readily above 60%. If someone at home is allergic to dust mites — extremely common and frequently undiagnosed in India — a cooler running nightly in the bedroom is working directly against the purifier in the corner.

Important

Empty and dry your cooler's tank when it is not in daily use. Standing water in an Indian summer breeds mosquitoes within a week, and Aedes mosquitoes specifically prefer clean domestic water.

If you are going to use both

  • Do not run them in the same room at the same time. The purifier will spend its energy treating a continuous stream of new outdoor air and never reach steady state.
  • Run the cooler while you are out, and the purifier in a closed room while you sleep — the reverse of what most households do.
  • Change the cooler pads at the start of every season. An old pad is a biological filter in the wrong direction.
  • Track humidity with a ₹500 hygrometer. Keeping the bedroom between 40% and 55% RH is the single most useful thing an allergy household can do.
  • In a genuinely dry climate, consider a fan plus purifier instead. You lose some cooling and gain a room you can actually keep clean.

Frequently asked questions

Does an air cooler purify the air?
No. The wet pad catches some coarse dust but has no fine-particle or gas-phase filtration, and the cooler continuously draws unfiltered outdoor air into the room. On a high-AQI day it makes indoor air quality worse, not better.
Is an air cooler bad for asthma?
It can be. Coolers raise indoor humidity into the range where dust mites and mould thrive, and they import outdoor pollutants and pollen. If asthma or allergic rhinitis is a concern, a purifier in a closed room is the better choice.
Can I use an air purifier and cooler in the same room?
You can, but the purifier will be largely wasted — a cooler needs an open window and pushes a large volume of unfiltered outdoor air through the room. Use them in different rooms, or at different times of day.
Which is cheaper to run, a cooler or a purifier?
A cooler, on electricity alone — roughly ₹100-300 a month against ₹200-500 for a purifier running continuously, though the purifier also needs ₹2,000-6,000 of filters a year. They do entirely different jobs, so cost is not really the deciding factor.
