Choose Air purifier if…

  • The pollution is coming from outside — smog season, a busy road, construction next door, crop-burning smoke.
  • You have pollen or dust allergies and need the windows shut.
  • You want continuous background control rather than a burst of dilution.

Choose Exhaust fan / ventilation if…

  • You are cooking. Nothing a purifier does removes fumes as fast as extracting them at the hob.
  • You have a gas appliance — combustion products need to go outside, not through a filter.
  • You are dealing with bathroom moisture, damp or a mould risk.
  • Anyone has been painting, laying flooring or using solvent-based adhesive.

Dilution and removal solve different problems

This distinction is worth internalising because it resolves nearly every version of this question. An exhaust fan does not reduce the amount of pollution in the world; it moves it from your kitchen to your street and brings the street's air in exchange. That is an excellent trade when your kitchen air is far worse than the street's, and a bad one when it is not.

A purifier does the opposite. It cannot help with anything ventilation-dependent — it does not touch CO₂, does not remove carbon monoxide, does not dry out a damp bathroom — but it does reduce the actual pollutant load in the air of a sealed room, which no amount of ventilation can do when the outdoor air is the source.

The Indian kitchen is the case that needs both

Indian cooking is a serious indoor emission source: high-heat tempering, deep frying and open-flame roasting produce PM2.5 concentrations in an unventilated kitchen that can rival a bad outdoor smog day, plus NO₂ and CO from the gas flame itself.

The correct arrangement is a chimney or a properly sized exhaust fan running during and for ten minutes after cooking — extraction at the source, before the fumes spread — and a purifier in the adjoining living space handling the fraction that escapes. A purifier alone in a kitchen is trying to catch smoke that has already dispersed through the flat.

Tip

During North India's smog season, run the kitchen exhaust only while actually cooking, keep the kitchen door shut, and let the purifier work on the rest of the flat. Leaving an exhaust fan running all evening in November is a slow leak of outdoor PM2.5 into your home.

What ventilation gives you that a purifier never will

Carbon dioxide is the clearest example. A closed bedroom with two adults can reach 1,500-2,500 ppm CO₂ overnight, well past the point where measured cognitive performance and sleep quality decline. No purifier reduces CO₂; only fresh air does.

This is the genuine tension in a high-pollution Indian city, and it does not have a clean answer. The honest advice is to ventilate at the least-polluted time of day — usually early afternoon rather than early morning, when the inversion has lifted — and let the purifier bring the particulate load back down afterwards.

Frequently asked questions

Is an exhaust fan better than an air purifier?
For indoor-generated pollution — cooking fumes, gas combustion products, bathroom moisture, solvent fumes — yes, and it is not close. For outdoor-origin pollution like winter smog and pollen, an exhaust fan makes things worse and a purifier in a closed room is the right answer.
Does an exhaust fan improve indoor air quality?
It improves it when indoor air is dirtier than outdoor air, which is the usual case while cooking or in a bathroom. On a high-AQI day it does the reverse, because it is pulling outdoor pollution in as fast as it pushes indoor air out.
Can an air purifier replace a kitchen chimney?
No. A chimney extracts fumes at the source before they disperse; a purifier can only treat what has already spread through the room. Use a chimney or exhaust while cooking and a purifier for the residual load afterwards.
How do I ventilate a home during smog season?
Ventilate briefly, at the least-polluted part of the day — usually early afternoon rather than early morning or late evening, when temperature inversions trap pollutants near ground level. Open up for 10-15 minutes, then close and let the purifier bring the level back down.
