How to Choose an Air Purifier in India (2026 Buying Guide)
Step 1: Verify it is genuine HEPA
HEPA is a defined standard: a true H13 filter captures at least 99.95% of particles at the most-penetrating size, around 0.3 microns. That covers PM2.5, PM10, pollen, dust and most bacteria.
The marketing trap is terminology. 'HEPA-type', 'HEPA-like' and 'HEPA-style' are not weaker versions of HEPA — they are explicit signals that the filter does not meet the standard. These phrases are common on cheaper Indian listings, so read the specification, not the headline.
'Sealed' matters almost as much. If the body allows air to bypass the filter, the filter's rating becomes theoretical. Dyson is the only mainstream brand that certifies the whole machine to HEPA H13 rather than just the filter media.
Step 2: Size it by CADR, then size up
CADR (Clean Air Delivery Rate, in m³/h) tells you how much clean air the unit actually delivers. It is the single most useful specification, and far more meaningful than a coverage figure in square feet.
Practical rule: CADR should be at least 5× your room's floor area in square metres. A 15 m² (about 160 sq ft) bedroom therefore wants 75 m³/h minimum — and considerably more if you are in a high-pollution city.
Then size up. Manufacturer coverage claims assume a sealed room of exactly that size with no ongoing pollution source, which describes no real Indian home. In Delhi, Ghaziabad, Noida or Gurugram, buy the unit rated for a room twice the size of yours.

Step 3: Do not forget activated carbon
HEPA captures particles. It does nothing about gases — and gases are what make air smell of diesel, smoke or cooking. Only activated carbon removes those, and the amount of carbon in the machine varies enormously between models.
If you live on a busy road, near industry, or in North India during stubble-burning season, carbon depth matters as much as the HEPA rating. A purifier with excellent HEPA and a token carbon mesh will drop your PM2.5 number while the room still smells of smoke.
Step 4: Run the filter maths before you buy
- Find the replacement filter price and expected life for your specific model, then calculate annual cost. Differences of ₹4,000 a year between models are common.
- Check filters are actually available in India for that model — not just listed globally. This is the main risk with Levoit and some Coway models.
- Prefer models with a washable pre-filter. It captures hair and large dust, extending HEPA life significantly, and it costs nothing to maintain.
- In high-pollution cities, assume filter life will be half to a third of the rated figure. The rating was not written for AQI 400.

What to ignore
- Ozone generators and 'activated oxygen' devices. Ozone is a respiratory irritant that can worsen asthma. Avoid entirely.
- 'Ioniser' as a primary mechanism. Bipolar ion systems from reputable brands are a reasonable supplement, but HEPA should be doing the work.
- Coverage figures in square feet quoted without a CADR number. That is marketing without a measurement.
- Very high 'stage counts'. Pre-filter, HEPA and carbon is the meaningful configuration; everything beyond that is usually naming.
- Built-in humidifiers unless you will clean the tank rigorously. A neglected water tank becomes a microbial source.
