Dust: airborne yes, settled no
This is the most common misunderstanding. A purifier removes dust that is currently suspended in the air, which is the fraction you inhale, and it reduces how quickly surfaces re-dust. It does not remove the film already on your shelf, and it cannot address dust arriving on shoes, clothing and through door gaps.
In a high-dust Indian home, the pre-filter is what determines your running cost. Washing a mesh every fortnight is the difference between a HEPA lasting nine months and five.
Smoke: two separate problems in one word
Smoke is particulate and gas simultaneously, and the two are handled by different stages. HEPA captures the particulate — this is why a purifier visibly clears a smoky room. Carbon adsorbs the gas-phase compounds that carry the smell.
That is why a purifier can leave a room measuring well on PM2.5 while still smelling of cigarettes: the HEPA is working and the carbon is saturated. In a smoking household, expect to replace carbon at roughly twice the manual's stated interval.
Important
Viruses and bacteria: what the evidence supports
Airborne viruses travel attached to respiratory droplets and aerosols, and HEPA captures those effectively. HEPA efficiency also rises below 0.3 microns, so even bare virions are captured better than the rated figure suggests. Bacteria are comfortably larger and are captured well.
The honest limits are worth stating. A purifier reduces airborne concentration in the room it is in; it does not sterilise a space, does not remove pathogens travelling on surfaces or hands, and works poorly against close-range transmission where someone is breathing directly at you. It also captures rather than kills — microbes remain in the filter, which is a reason to handle used filters with care and change them outdoors.
Allergies: helpful, alongside things that matter more
- For pollen and pet dander, a bedroom purifier with the door closed is genuinely effective and is the highest-value place to put one.
- For dust mite allergy, the purifier is secondary. Mites live in bedding and upholstery, not in the air. Wash bedding at 60 °C weekly, encase mattresses and pillows, and keep bedroom humidity under 50% — mites need moisture, not dust.
- For pet allergy, the dander is continuously replenished. A purifier reduces the airborne load; keeping the pet out of the bedroom reduces it far more.
- For mould allergy, fix the damp. A purifier catching spores while a wall stays wet is treating the symptom while the source grows.
The things it simply does not do
Carbon dioxide is the important one. A closed bedroom with two adults can pass 2,000 ppm overnight, at which point measured sleep quality and next-day cognitive performance decline. No purifier reduces CO₂ — it is not filtered or adsorbed. Only fresh air helps, which is the genuine tension in a high-pollution city and does not have a tidy resolution.
Carbon monoxide is the dangerous one. Activated carbon does not adsorb CO usefully, and no domestic purifier should be relied on near a gas geyser or a hob. Fit a CO alarm; it costs less than a filter.
Humidity is the misunderstood one. Purifiers neither add nor remove moisture. In Indian monsoon conditions a dehumidifier is a separate purchase, and it is the appliance that actually addresses mould risk.
