Do Air Purifiers Actually Help With Allergies and Asthma?
What the evidence supports
HEPA filtration demonstrably removes airborne particulate allergens — pollen, pet dander, mould spores and dust-mite debris — from room air, and many people with allergic rhinitis or asthma report fewer symptoms when running one in the bedroom overnight.
The mechanism is straightforward and uncontroversial: fewer allergen particles in the air you breathe for eight hours means less airway irritation. Where studies show mixed results, it is usually because purifiers were undersized, run in open rooms, or used without addressing non-airborne allergen reservoirs.
So the honest framing is that a purifier is one effective component of allergen control, not a complete solution.
What a purifier cannot do
- It cannot remove dust mites living in mattresses, pillows and upholstery. Those are not airborne, and they are frequently the main cause of morning congestion and sneezing.
- It cannot fix a damp wall or a mould source. Purifiers capture spores; they do not stop mould growing.
- It cannot help much with the door open, or in a room far larger than its CADR supports.
- It cannot substitute for prescribed medication. If you have asthma, your management plan comes from your doctor.
Tip
What to buy, and what to avoid
- BUY: true H13 HEPA in a well-sealed body. Coway Sleek Pro and Levoit Core 300S are the strongest picks for bedrooms.
- BUY: quiet operation, 25 dB or below on sleep mode. A purifier you switch off at bedtime protects you for zero hours.
- BUY: a washable pre-filter if you have pets, to keep HEPA life and running costs sane.
- AVOID: ozone generators and 'activated oxygen' cleaners. Ozone is a respiratory irritant and health authorities advise against them in occupied spaces.
- AVOID: relying on an ioniser as the primary mechanism. Bipolar ion systems from reputable brands are a reasonable supplement; HEPA should do the work.
- AVOID: humidifier-combination units unless you will clean the tank rigorously — a neglected tank becomes a mould and bacteria source.
