What Is a HEPA Filter, and What Does H13 Actually Mean?
The standard, and the grades within it
HEPA is defined by the European standard EN 1822, which classifies filters by their efficiency at the Most Penetrating Particle Size. The grades run E10 to E12 (technically EPA, not HEPA), H13 and H14 (HEPA proper), and U15 upward (ULPA, for cleanrooms).
For a domestic air purifier in India, H13 is the grade to insist on. H14 exists and is more efficient on paper, but the denser media restricts airflow, and a machine that filters more thoroughly while moving less air cleans your room more slowly.

Why the rating is quoted at 0.3 microns
It is the hardest size for a fibre filter to capture. Larger particles are caught by impaction and interception; smaller ones move erratically enough under Brownian diffusion that they collide with fibres almost inevitably. In between, around 0.3 microns, both mechanisms are at their weakest.
So the rating describes worst-case performance. A true H13 filter is more than 99.95% efficient at 0.1 microns and at 1 micron; 0.3 microns is where it does least well. Anyone who tells you HEPA lets viruses through because viruses are smaller than 0.3 microns has misunderstood the physics of the test.
The 'HEPA-type' problem
There is no legal definition of 'HEPA-type', 'HEPA-like' or 'HEPA-style' in India or anywhere else. The phrases exist so a filter that would fail an H13 test can still carry the four letters on the packaging, and they appear on a great many Indian marketplace listings.
The practical difference is larger than it sounds. A 90% filter and a 99.95% filter differ by a factor of 200 in what passes through. On a Delhi winter day that is the difference between a bedroom that reads 15 µg/m³ and one that reads 60.

Sealing matters as much as the media
A filter is only as good as the housing around it. If the body allows air to travel around the filter rather than through it, some proportion of the airflow is never filtered at all, and the H13 rating on the cartridge becomes theoretical.
Most brands certify the filter. Dyson is the notable mainstream exception in certifying the whole machine as sealed to H13, which is a genuine engineering claim rather than a marketing one. For other brands, a well-fitted gasket and a filter that requires a firm push to seat are reasonable proxies.
Life, replacement and the washing question
- Do not wash a HEPA filter. Water collapses the fibre mat, destroys any electrostatic charge in the media, and leaves damp fibres that grow mould. A washed HEPA filter is a worse filter and a health risk.
- Do wash the pre-filter. It is a plastic or fabric mesh designed for exactly that, and washing it every 2-4 weeks is the single biggest lever on how long the HEPA behind it lasts.
- Expect 6-9 months from a HEPA in a high-dust Indian city, rather than the 12 months usually quoted. Filter-life indicators count runtime hours, not actual loading.
- Vacuuming a HEPA filter is a poor compromise — it removes surface lint, damages the media, and does nothing about what is embedded in the depth of the mat.
- Check replacement filter price and Indian availability before you buy the machine. An unsupported purifier is an expensive fan.
