About this grooming device

  • Rotary heads flex in four directions and follow a contoured jaw and neck far more easily than a fixed foil
  • Genuinely wet-and-dry and fully washable — a foam shave in the shower is comfortable and quick
  • Five-minute quick charge gives a full shave, which is the spec that actually matters on a weekday morning
  • The cheapest route into a proper daily-driver electric shaver from a brand with real Indian service reach
  • Pop-up trimmer handles sideburns and moustache without a second device

Our verdict

Rotary versus foil is the real decision in electric shaving, and it is decided by your face rather than by price. Foils shave flat planes closer; rotaries follow curves better. If your jaw and neck are strongly contoured — or if you shave your head — a rotary will get into places a foil skips, and the Series 3000 is the least expensive competent way to find out whether that is you.

Judged on its own terms it is a good, unglamorous machine. Four-direction flexing heads, full washability, wet-and-dry use and a five-minute quick charge are all genuinely useful, and Philips' service reach means it will not become landfill over a ₹400 part. What it does not do is match a Braun Series 7 or a Panasonic Arc5 for closeness, and no amount of technique will close that gap.

Budget the head set. Rotary shavers hide their running cost in a part most first-time buyers do not know exists: the SH30 head set is about ₹2,200 and due roughly every two years. Skip it and the shave degrades so gradually that most people blame the machine rather than the blades. Plan for it and this is an honest ₹3,300 shaver with a low cost per year.

What we like

  • Genuinely wet-and-dry and fully washable — a foam shave in the shower is comfortable and quick
  • Five-minute quick charge gives a full shave, which is the spec that actually matters on a weekday morning

What we don't

  • Does not shave as close as a Braun foil — expect a good shave, not a perfect one
  • Rotary heads can tug on very coarse or curly hair until the skin adapts over two to three weeks
  • Head set replacement at roughly ₹2,200 every two years is a real cost
  • 45-minute runtime is modest and the battery is not user-replaceable
  • Louder than a foil shaver

About Philips

The sensible default for most Indian homes, in two different categories. Philips' AC-series air purifiers combine real HEPA filtration, an honest numeric PM2.5 readout rather than a vague colour ring, and India's best-supported purifier service network at prices well below Dyson. In male grooming Philips is simply the market — OneBlade, the BT/MG trimmer families and the Series 3000-9000 shavers together hold a share no rival approaches, and the reason is unglamorous: spare combs, replacement blades and service centres exist in tier-2 and tier-3 India, which is where most trimmers actually die.

Took two weeks to get used to

First electric shaver. The first ten days it pulled a bit and I nearly returned it, then my skin adjusted and now it is comfortable. Not as close as a blade but I save ten minutes every morning.

Shower shave is the best part

Using it with gel in the shower is much more comfortable than dry. Battery lasts about two weeks for me. Wish the price of the replacement heads was lower.

Philips Shaver Series 3000 S3122/51 — frequently asked questions

What is the Philips Shaver Series 3000 price in India?
The S3122/51 has an MRP of about ₹5,495 and typically sells between ₹3,100 and ₹3,600 on Amazon and Flipkart. Budget an additional ₹2,200 for an SH30 replacement head set roughly every two years — this is the running cost most first-time buyers overlook.
Rotary or foil shaver — which is better for Indian men?
It depends on your face and your beard, not your budget. Rotary heads (Philips) flex in multiple directions and follow a contoured jaw, neck or scalp better, and suit longer or patchier growth. Foil shavers (Braun, Panasonic) cut closer on flat planes and are gentler on sensitive skin. For coarse, dense, fast-growing hair — very common in India — a Panasonic foil with its 14,000 CPM motor handles the load best; for a strongly angular jaw or head shaving, choose rotary.
