Setting up a newborn's room: water and air

Water & airIndicative budget ₹12,000₹35,000Last reviewed 2026-08-08

The problem

New parents in Indian cities are sold a great deal for a nursery, and the two interventions that carry the strongest evidence are among the cheapest.

For water, the specific risk with a documented mechanism is nitrate. Infants under six months convert ingested nitrate to nitrite, which reduces the blood's oxygen-carrying capacity — the condition WHO documents as methaemoglobinaemia. Bottle-fed infants are most exposed, because formula is made up with tap water and it is the entire fluid intake.

For air, the risk with the most severe consequence is carbon monoxide, and no air purifier addresses it. A certified alarm costs a fraction of a purifier.

Everything else — filtration, sizing, filter media — matters, and it matters after those two.

What this situation actually needs

Requirements first, in the order they matter. Note that several of these are not products.

  • Nitrate below the BIS limit in water used for formula

The one water contaminant with a documented acute risk to this specific age group, and it is undetectable by taste or TDS meter.

Laboratory nitrate test; RO if the result is near or above 45 mg/L as NO₃

  • Microbiologically safe water

Infants are among the groups affected at lower doses and more severely.

UV or UF stage, or boiling as an interim measure

  • Carbon monoxide protection

No purifier removes it, and the failure mode is fatal without warning.

EN 50291 or UL 2034 certified alarm near sleeping areas

  • Particulate reduction in the sleeping room

Long continuous occupancy makes this the room where reduction is worth most.

H13 HEPA at five air changes per hour for the room volume

  • Low VOC and formaldehyde load

New nursery furniture is usually engineered wood, which off-gasses most heavily when new — and emission rises with Indian temperatures.

E0 or E1 emission-class board; air new furniture out before it enters the room

The specification

Written as a specification rather than a product name, deliberately. A specification survives a model being discontinued and can be taken to any shop; a product recommendation expires.

What to avoid

In every one of these situations there is a purchase that looks obviously right and is wrong.

  • Any purifier with an ioniser, plasma or 'activated oxygen' mode

These can generate ozone, which is a regulated respiratory irritant. There is no version of this trade-off that makes sense in an infant's room.

  • Boiling water to make it 'safe' for formula without testing for nitrate

Boiling inactivates organisms and concentrates nitrate. If nitrate is the problem, boiling makes the dose worse in exactly the case the limit exists to protect.

  • A purifier positioned to blow directly onto the cot

Draught and noise both matter at this age. Position for room circulation rather than for directed airflow.

  • New engineered-wood furniture installed the week before the baby arrives

Formaldehyde emission is highest when new and rises with temperature. Air it out elsewhere for as long as you can first.

Frequently asked questions

Is RO water safe for making baby formula?
Yes, and in areas with nitrate or fluoride in the groundwater it is the appropriate choice. The important step is the test that comes first — if nitrate is present, RO is warranted and boiling alone is not; if the supply is clean municipal water at low TDS, UV addresses the actual risk and RO is unnecessary.
Do I need an air purifier for a newborn?
In a city with high seasonal particulate, a correctly sized unit in the sleeping room with the door closed is a reasonable purchase. It ranks below a carbon monoxide alarm if you have any gas appliance, and below sorting out kitchen extraction, because those address risks a purifier cannot touch.
What should I test the water for before a baby arrives?
Nitrate above all, plus total coliform and E. coli, and fluoride if you are in an endemic district. Nitrate is not detectable by taste or TDS meter and boiling concentrates it, which makes it the parameter most likely to be missed.
