Old building plumbing — the contaminant that enters after the source
The problem
In an older building, the water leaving the municipal main may be fine and the water arriving at your tap may not be — because the plumbing between them is doing something to it.
Lead is the specific concern, and it enters almost entirely from solder, brass fittings and taps rather than from the source. India has no national inventory of building plumbing, so testing is the only route to knowledge.
Corroding galvanised iron pipework contributes iron and discoloration, and old risers accumulate sediment that mobilises whenever supply pressure changes.
What this situation actually needs
Requirements first, in the order they matter. Note that several of these are not products.
Lead characterised at your own tap
It is a property-specific question that no general information can answer.
First-draw sample by ICP-MS or GFAAS, taken after six hours of no water use

BIS sets 0.01 mg/L with no relaxation, and WHO states there is no known exposure without effect.

The specification
Written as a specification rather than a product name, deliberately. A specification survives a model being discontinued and can be taken to any shop; a product recommendation expires.

What to avoid
In every one of these situations there is a purchase that looks obviously right and is wrong.
A flushed water sample when testing for lead
It measures water that has not been standing in the fitting, which is not the water you drink first thing in the morning. Insist on first-draw.
Assuming a new tap is safer
New brass leaches most in its first months. Replacing fittings is worthwhile long-term and is not an immediate improvement.
A generic carbon filter marketed as removing lead
Only carbon blocks specifically engineered and certified to NSF/ANSI 53 for lead have a basis for the claim, and most sold in India do not carry it.
Boiling water from old plumbing to make it safer
Lead is not volatile. Boiling concentrates it in the water that remains.
