Solutions by situation
A rented apartment — buy what you can take with you
The problem
In a rented flat, the usual optimisation changes. A plumbed-in under-sink system that is excellent value over eight years is a poor decision if you move in eighteen months — uninstalling, transporting, re-plumbing and re-commissioning it costs money and usually breaks something.
There is also a permissions dimension. Drilling, plumbing modifications and wall-mounted units may need the landlord's agreement, and the answer is often no.
And the water itself is an unknown you inherit: you do not know the building's tank cleaning history, the age of the plumbing, or what the previous tenant's purifier was compensating for.
What this situation actually needs
Requirements first, in the order they matter. Note that several of these are not products.
Portability
The whole optimisation, if your tenure is uncertain.
Countertop or free-standing units; avoid permanent plumbing modifications
Water characterised on arrival
You are inheriting a building's plumbing and tank history without documentation.
Baseline panel including coliforms, drawn at the kitchen tap
Low installation commitment
Landlord permission and reinstatement obligations both cost money.
Tap-mounted or countertop connections; no drilling where avoidable
Predictable exit
A rented purifier is collected; an owned one has to be moved.
Rental with a lock-in period no longer than your likely tenure
The specification
Written as a specification rather than a product name, deliberately. A specification survives a model being discontinued and can be taken to any shop; a product recommendation expires.
| Attribute | Target | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Water — form factor | Countertop or free-standing, not under-sink | Moves with you without re-plumbing |
| Water — ownership | Rental where tenure is under two years | Below the typical rent-vs-buy crossover, and the provider carries breakdown risk |
| Air — everything | Standard sizing logic; units are portable by nature | No trade-off needed here |
| Verification | Test water at the kitchen tap on moving in | You are inheriting an undocumented plumbing and tank history |
What to avoid
In every one of these situations there is a purchase that looks obviously right and is wrong.
An under-sink plumbed system on a one-year lease
Installation and reinstatement costs, plus a high chance of damage in transit, wipe out the value advantage over that period.
Assuming the previous tenant's purifier tells you anything
You do not know what it was bought for, whether it was maintained, or whether its filters have been changed in three years. Test the water yourself.
Wall-mounting anything without written permission
Reinstatement at the end of a tenancy is a real cost and a common deposit dispute.
