Kitchen smoke and cooking fumes — fix the extraction first
The problem
High-temperature Indian cooking — tadka, deep frying, tawa roti — generates fine particulate concentrations that frequently exceed simultaneous outdoor levels, even in a polluted city.
The person cooking gets the largest dose because they are standing in the plume, and it happens daily, largely unnoticed, because the smell is normal and expected.
The common response is to buy an air purifier for the kitchen. It is the wrong instrument: it cannot outrun a source emitting a metre away, and grease aerosol ruins HEPA media quickly.
Meanwhile a large share of Indian flat chimney installations recirculate — filtering grease and returning combustion gases to the room — and most owners do not know which type they have.
What this situation actually needs
Requirements first, in the order they matter. Note that several of these are not products.
Capture at source
Removing emissions before they mix into room air beats filtering them afterwards by a wide margin.

Combustion gas removal
NO₂ and CO from a gas hob are gases; recirculating filters do nothing to them.

The specification
Written as a specification rather than a product name, deliberately. A specification survives a model being discontinued and can be taken to any shop; a product recommendation expires.

What to avoid
In every one of these situations there is a purchase that looks obviously right and is wrong.
An air purifier in the kitchen itself
It fights a continuously emitting source at close range and grease aerosol ruins HEPA media fast. Expensive to run and ineffective at the job.
A recirculating chimney bought as an air quality measure
It filters grease and some odour and returns everything else. If air quality is the reason for the purchase, ducted is the only version that delivers it.
Switching the exhaust on when smoke appears
By then the plume is already in the room. Starting before ignition captures it at the point of generation.
An unflued gas or kerosene heater anywhere in a closed room
Different appliance, same chemistry, worse consequences — this is a documented cause of carbon monoxide deaths in India.
